Anyone know who makes the brass for black hills ammo? I'm about to get into reloading and have a few hundred of these I have saved over the past few years.

I guess my second question is my reloading books(hornady and lyman #49) both only specify one type of case each: Winchester in the Hornady and Remington in the Lyman is this data useless with other brands of brass since different brands have a slightly different case volume?

I also have alot of LC 06 brass how much diffrence is it from the brass referenced in the loading books I have?

LC brass is a little thicker and has less case volume. This will result in higher pressures versus a normal volume case. You should reduce your load when using LC brass and work up.

I am not sure about Black Hills Brass.

I've heard that alot of Black Hills brass is from the DoD auctions. I know alot of their reloads are Mil Spec brass. They are in the top 5 for buyers of expended brass from the Dod.

Black Hills has their new brass made for them, with their own headstamp (BHA). I don't know who makes it, but it's fully reloadable. Just work up your load like you would for any other brass.

Hope this helps.

Fred

I've been told that it is made by Winchester.

Brass with the "Black Hills" headstamp is good stuff!

I have also read that BHA headstamp cases were made for Black Hills by Winchester.

As to loading various headstamp cases, the best thing to do is to weigh them. Heavy brass has thicker walls and less internal volume. The old NRA rule of thumb was to load one grain less powder for every 11 grains heavier brass. But that was for .30-06 size rounds. And it is not a license to add powder for lighter brass, "work up" and inspect is the rule on increases.
