I have some LC brass in .223 that was used in Black Hills blue box ammo. The crimp ring is still around the primer, but I suspect that is just left over from the time this was Lake City ammo and does not actually apply any crimping force on the primer. Am I correct in assuming that Black Hills removed the crimp and did not re-crimp the new primer?

They have to have removed the crimp before they could possibly have reloaded it.

Probably swaged them out (not trimmed out) and you are just seeing the ring left over from the old crimp.

The only other possibility is they re-crimped them again after the primer seating operation.

Just try seating a primer, and if it goes in, they are fine.

There is no crimp in the Black Hill reloads I've seen.

A really nice thing about an RCBS Primer Pocket Swagger is you can take just the pocket swagger part and try to fit it into the primer pocket. If the swagger goes all the down flush, no crimp to worry about. If it hangs up any place short of flush, needs to have the crimp swagged out. When I have mixed lots of brass or am unsure about primer crimps I check each case this way. Takes a few seconds each.
