ive been hearing that .223 55gr. hollow points fragment more often than they expand
im not sure how much truth there is to this
i was wondering if the hollow point manages to stay intact and just expand how big would it get?
i know a .45 hollow point will expand to about the size of a quarter.
also would it be better for the bullet to fragment or just expand
ive been buying lots of hollow point and soft point lately
but since i live in a very urban area so if there was a shtf situation
i think most of my shots would be inside of 50 yrds
so i thought the hollow point would be better in that type of situation
if i needed more penatration i have plenty of fmj already stocked up
ive tried doing searches here and other sites and turned up with nothing
but i know you guys will have some good info. thanks

the Ammo Oracle is your friend.

in general, manufacturer JHP .223 will perform as the manufacturer saya it will.

Given the current data of terminal ballistics, I would prefer heavily fragmenting 223 ammo.

Expanding on what gazpacho said: (Trust the manufacturer) but at the same time, a 223 round is tiny so expansion will be much less significant than that found in a traditional hunting round...ie .30 (30-30, .308Win, 30-06)

1) 223 is not intended to expand, rather to fragment and create maximum wound channels. This is due to the extremely high velocities ~3000+fps (Test this with big water bottles)
2) For the short range, finding a heavily fragmenting round will be a better for the shtf situation.
3) If you are hunting (which I do with a m700 Remington VSF) you will need to make head shots to avoid fouling the meat.

I hope this helps..

Most HP rifle rounds do not "expand" like a handgun HP because they are not designed to. That is what SP's (soft points) are for. Most rifle HP's are designed for better accuracy, whereas SP's are designed for expansion.
