The easier question would be which ones do *not* use the AR mag... and that list would be:

-Mini 14
-AK types
-HK roller locked types (less common)

Any other well known/available .223 rifles out there that do *not* use the AR mag?

Lots of rifles: FNC, some Steyr AUGs, SAR-4800 (Imbel) in .223, FAMAS G2, Tavor, L85, Bushmaster/Remington ACR, Robinson XCR and M-96, SAR-80 (Singapore), Beretta AR-90 and ARX-160. Probably many others.

Not totally accurate. While it's true that the AK doesn't use the AR15/M16 type magazine, there are certain weapons like the Saiga in .223 that has an adapter that you can buy. It snaps right into the saiga like it was a magazine. Then the ar/m16 magazines slide right into it and work perfectly. Doesn't require any significant work to make the saiga capable of using the AR magazines. I wanted a new .223, but I really didn't want to spend roughly $1000 for an AR. Plus, I like the reliability of the AK format. So, I got the saiga for $400; and can use it's magazines, or use the adapter and use ar/m16 mags. Best of all worlds. And the ar15/m16 adapter snaps in like an AK magazine, so it can be removed just as fast as a magazine, and the original magazines can be used. Pretty awesome. There's different adapters out there. Some aren't good or require machining. If interested, make sure you know which one to get.

Thanks, I didn't know about that Remington pump, I kinda like that idea!!!

Lots of research to do now!!!

If anything, the newer emag from Magpul answers the question - a 5.56 mag to fit most NATO rifles in that caliber using the AR type magazine.

On the other hand, SHOT 2010 saw the introduction of an AR10 lower that uses G3 mags - as those are about .99c a pop right now, not a bad idea.

I guess I should have said, "used by default". My buddy does have one of those AR mag adapters for his Bulgy AK that appears to work well enough for the range, though ejection of the AR mag is difficult, especially if you want to do it quickly. The AR mag fits very tight in the adapter.
