Well you see, all the used brass is on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as a large deposit of copper jackets...lol. Actually, from what I understand, it is not that we are using 55gr FMJ or whatever soft point this or that, etc but rather the fact that the raw materials that are used to make those bullets are being redirected to the production of the bullets we are using over there. Honestly, it makes sense to me.
As for things like the alleged primer shortage what I was hearing is that, for the Winchester primers at least, they moved their production to a new facility and stopped production in the older facility before starting up the new one so there was a short supply issue. That being the case, people that could not find their preferred primers bought other primers and since those were not selling as briskly as the Winchesters they were not ordered in the same quantities and ended up running out while Winchester was getting their new factory going. Take that one with a grain of salt but both answers make perfect sense to me.
