.224 bullets at Midway

Well you see, all the used brass is on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as a large deposit of copper jackets...lol. Actually, from what I understand, it is not that we are using 55gr FMJ or whatever soft point this or that, etc but rather the fact that the raw materials that are used to make those bullets are being redirected to the production of the bullets we are using over there. Honestly, it makes sense to me.
As for things like the alleged primer shortage what I was hearing is that, for the Winchester primers at least, they moved their production to a new facility and stopped production in the older facility before starting up the new one so there was a short supply issue. That being the case, people that could not find their preferred primers bought other primers and since those were not selling as briskly as the Winchesters they were not ordered in the same quantities and ended up running out while Winchester was getting their new factory going. Take that one with a grain of salt but both answers make perfect sense to me.

I didn't even mention the availability of primmers which I think is also B. I have heard the war effort, that countries like China and Korea are buying up all the material. That may explain the price but not the lack of availability, I mean come on manufactures will pay more for the raw material but they will still be available they will just pass the cost on to their consumer like the oil industry.

I've picked up 2k .223 cases and 3k 55gr FMJ bullets. Primers, that's different story. For what it is worth, I talked with a local shop owner his Federal primer order will not be filled for 6 months. I'm not sure of all the details, but that was his story. Appearently, Federal is tooled up to make ammo and are using up the primers for loaded ammo. Again, this is hearsay, but it does kind of make sense.
A lot of the bullet machines that could be making 55FMJ, 55PSP, or 0.224 whatever are quite busy making 62gr SS109 bullets for military resupply. There are .224 bullets available, just not so much of the cheap plinking stuff that many seem addicted to.
I've heard from enough credible sources that I believe all federal primers are going into federal ammo and that federal ammo plants are running 3 shifts 6 or 7 days a week.
Other brand primers are available via mail order with no problem to most places. Lots are stockpiling components due to political concerns and expected price inflation.

I heard that Elvis is alive. Just because you hear something doesn't make it fact. There are a few factors that is causing the shortage, so don't think it's just one event.
I have been buying bullets from MidwayUSA all of last year, preparing for the higher prices. You will just have to keep on checking on their site. Don't even think about using their "will be in stock date" because it's always pushed back further. If you do manage to order some...look for the bulk offerings because Midway will throw in the shipping for "free."
