I am shooting a Ruger MKII 22LR at 25yds, Red Dot scope, benchrested, I can shoot 1 1/2" groups all day but I am unable to get a group with all the holes touching one another...I have tried all the different ammos to no avail, they seem to all shoot about the same ( solids, 40gr).
Any and all advice appreciated.
Chuck

i can shoot my Remmie 504 .22 at 40yds. benched and get the same results as you. with a pistol i dunno if you could touch holes.

On good days, i've touched 2 holes.

Lots of things to look at. First 22lr semi auto firearms are not usually as accurate as actions that lock up tight unless they have been gone over by a gun guru who knows 22lr semi's.
The bolt face must be square to the barrel, the recoil springs must match the ammo you shoot, usually have to pick one type/brand that works well and adjust the firearm to that one. Polishing of the chamber sometimes helps as well as other moving parts.
The variation between 22lr ammo of even the same lot/box is well know and is the reason target/match grade ammo costs so much more than regular types of ammo.
Then there is the shooter, many variations here. What type rest do you use?
For an off the shelf semi auto handgun you seem to be doing pretty good.

Thanks for the info, I am useing a standard wooden rest with 2 or 3 sandbags on top, the heel of my hands and the butt of the gun rest on top of the bag...

Tomorrow I am going to rest the barrel on the sand bag and the heel of my hands on the table to try for a more steady rest.

I'm putting up 5 shot groups...

Federal premiums seem to be most consistant...

I'm going to try cleaning the barrel every 15 rounds, only takes a second or so...

I'll let you know how it goes...

regards:)

Your MK II red dot combo should be capable of some pretty good accuracy. Actually 1 1/2 " groups are not bad. a lot of folks would be happy with that.

Try skipping the bench and shoot off hand. If you aren't steady enough off hand, use the bench, but don't have the gun touch anything. Rest your forearms on the bags so the gun can recoil naturally.

Try lots of different ammo. Cleaning every 15 rounds is not needed and can actually hurt.

Good Luck...

Joe

Shoot more bullets.
Are you supporting the barrel when you shoot? If so try just supporting your wrist and let the gun shoot with it own harmonics uncomprimised. Sometimes the harmonics of the gun can cause funny things to happen.

I'm running into the same problem with my Browning Nomad. I started out using some of the .22 lr ammo that I use in my rifles. My handgun groups didn't shrink until I tried CCI Subsonics and CCI SGB.

They're still not as tight as I would like, but it is an improvement. I'm going to continue experimenting with ammo brands until I find what shoots best.

I'm finding that generally the lower velocity loads seem to be the most accurate out of the handgun.
Not too shabby out of a rifle either because I can also cut a string of touching holes with my beater rifle with the Subsonics.
BTW the SGB sucks out of the rifle.:scrutiny:

I think I've found my new fox hunting load.;)

any info on the Sig Trailside...?

I don't own one, but some of the fellas at the local range really like theirs. I think it may have been discontinued.

If you are looking to upgrade, you may want to take a look at a S&W model 41.

I bought this one earlier this year and the accuracy is great.

1 ½” groups are not bad. Here’s what mine will do at twenty-five yards if I’m having a good day.
This was shot with Remington hollow points, which seems to be the most accurate among the inexpensive stuff, at least in my gun. I’m too cheap to use the costly premium ammunition.

Chuck,

I am able to get groups like XBT above with my 5.5" Ruger22/45 and dot sight. It sounds like you weren't resting the barrel and I definately get better groups when I rest the barrel and the grip. I use that cheapy MTM Case Guard red pistol rest for like $10 I got from Walmart.
With that combo I was able to shoot a 3.5" 5-shot group at 100 yards. But that never happened again...

XBT, my set up is almost identical to yours...

are you benchrested with the barrel resting on something ?

I am starting to believe one big ragged hole not possible with MKII, and present ammo at 25 yds...

Hammerli might be the only way, they send a .750... 5 shot group certification out with every gun (Trailside). I cant get that with my set up.

1 1/2" groups when everything is right....

your pics are great thanks for sharing...

is your Leupold a combination crosshair/red dot or just the red dot...?

I'm using a Tasco red dot only ...looking for a combo scope.

Abner... I am not up to 100 yds yet but thinking about it...

regards :)

Chuck, The scope is a Leupold-Gilmore LG-1, a red dot only. It does have the small two-minute dot, which seems to help in fine shooting.

I am shooting from a bench using sandbags under the gun at the bottom of the grip and at the front of the frame in the trigger guard area. A bit of the rear part of the barrel is also on the bags. I try to bed the gun as much as possible by gently tapping it down onto the bags. I am shooting two-handed, resting my wrists on the bags and my arms on the top of the bench.

The groups pictured are the best I can shoot with the cheap bulk-packed ammo I am using, but I think that some experimentation with premium target ammunition might result in somewhat better groups.

The accuracy of my gun improved a little after it had fired two or three thousand rounds.

Good luck, Jim

Use a fixed power scope, not a red dot if you want precision groups

On my Contenders, Encores and Ruger Flatside, I have had to use a fixed power scope for precision shots. With such a configuration, I am able to shoot clover leafs at 25 to 50 yards all day long, but NEVER once did so with a red dot. In my opinion, the T/C scopes are about as good as it gets. Even the variables have excellent return to zero. Never experienced "run-out".

Jim, thanks for the info, we are shooting exactly alike....
if I get any better I will let you know how I did it.

Doc 2005, that is one of the conclusions I have come to, that I need crosshairs to get any better or at least to eleminate the uncertainity of the red dot...that is what I am going to try next.
