First off, This is my first thread on this awesome website. I have visited it many times throughout the years to read up on different topics so I just wanted to say hello to everybody :D

So basically, I am currently getting started on an AR15 build. I bought a stripped lower and was planning on building a M16A4gery. But I have recently decided to continue the build but have it chambered in .22lr. I have gone over just about all the options surfing the web and different websites looking for a 20 inch rifle M16 style .22lr kit/upper. Its came down to the Model "1" Sales rifle kit that comes with all the needed parts to finish a build off a stripped lower for about 600 bones (bucks). BUT, I haven't been sucessful finding much information or reviews on the M1S .22's. Of the little information I have found, I read some really good things, and also a few bad (Most of the bad things were very vauge on the issues and the people who posted such things didn't seem to know much about anything anyways). I have also noticed the Spikes Tactical ST22's which have really good reviews (they are also all carbines but I could live with that), but they only sell the upper's and they cost about just as much as a whole kit from M1S. And if I took the ST22 route, I would spend a lot more money having to fork out more doe for a lower parts kit and a stock/buffer assembly on top of it all.

So basically I am here to ask if anybody has any information or hands on with the Model 1 Sales .22lr kits and if they are a solid piece of equipment. ANY information would be helpful at this point. Also if anybody has any other suggestions on my current stance on things about any other routes or anything to say about the Spikes Tactical it would also be much appreciated.
-THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, AKrazy

First, glad you've joined the High Road.

I don't know a great deal about the 20" AR .22s, but I would suggest you search out info on customer service for both companies. I've heard good and bad on both of them, heavier in the bad column.

You might see if CMMG makes what you're after; they have great customer service.

I have a M1S .22LR upper assembly. It arrived on the porch a few weeks after I placed the order, I stuck it on an existing lower, and I've been shooting it without any trouble ever since. I can't comment on their post-purchase customer service, because I never had any reason to find out.

It's the most reliable, easy-to-clean .22 semiauto rifle I've ever had or fooled with.

I have read a little bit on each of the companies, each have some good and a little bad. But most of the bad reviews I have seen on M1S were several years ago. Anything recent (recent being the last 2 years or so) I have read the owners of these rifles really enjoyed them, specially the more recent information I could find on them all the people have really liked them, but there is still those nasty bits of information you trip across and the lack of "good" reviews and info that has me asking haha.

ArmedBear, about how long would you say you have had your M1S upper? And if you had a guess how many rounds do you think you've ran through it? got any pictures?? :D

AFAIAC, my preferences in a .22 "AR15" are as follows:

1. A regular 5.56x45 upper, with a 9 or better twist, so you can shoot Aguila SSS ammo

2. A rifle built as a .22 from the factory - purpose-built rimfire - the S&W .22 is the one I'd get - reason being the light weight.

3. Last but not least a "build" such as you describe, with a dedicated upper. Worst of all worlds - idiotic 16" twist, heavier than need be.

Having said that, #3 builds (a) can be quite fun and entertaining and a useful training tool, and (b) would rapidly jump up from #3 to first place if they'd put a 10 or better twist for the Aguila ammo on one (please, somebody's got to be listening!). Or better yet, a S&W .22 type rifle with the 'better' twist rate.

YMMV.
