22lr bolt action - what to get?

Did Winchester make a Model 70 type in 22lr that I could find used?

Yeah, they made the Model 320. I got one used in the 70's for $20.

It's a pretty decent performer, but the wood lacks class... it's some kind of 'hardwood' that's 'walnut finished' and has pressed checkering and just... too much finish on it... LOL

But it's fun and accurate as all rifles of this type are. :)

But... of what's out there now, I'd get a CZ.

New Production: CZ-452 series
Old Production: A Win. 69A is an excellent rifle. Like a no-frills Win. 52. I have my Grandfather's Win. 69 (Pre A model) with peep sights, and it is extremely accurate.

You are more likely to come across the CZ-452 first, however, and at a good price. I'd go with the 452. At least, mounting a scope would be easier, too.

CZ 452 for new... ya can't touch it for new I don't believe. I have a special and will eventually get more.

You might as well buy a new gun safe now.

Warning...CZs are addictive.

Just what I need - I have two and need a third already and it'd likely be full before it gets here - I don't know about four safes.... :what:

.22

CZ 452 Trainer. Mine has a Simmons 22 mag scope on it and it's a tack driver. rimfirecentral.com/CZ

Double plus on CZ

I'm sure there are lots of great rifles out there in this price range ... but mine is a CZ trainer, and it's sure nice.

I sold several seldom used RemRugWinchesters to feed my CZ addiction.

I just love the quality for the price.

I looked at the TOZ in the Military Gun Supply retail shop - seemed mighty small to me. More like a youth rifle than an adult-sized model.

CZ Special

I bought a CZ Special in 22 LR for my son , shots great out of the box with balk ammo. TEDMI

CZ453 is best rifle comparable to Anschutz, for a lot less money.

Mmm. That's a bit of a stretch, IMO. But, otherwise, a 452 with an aftermarket trigger and/or sear or the 453 (if you don't mind the stretch for the set trigger, unset trigger is very good) is the best bet for the price.

remington 581

Senior citizen uses remington 581 purchased at white elephant in spokane, in 1966.

Lands are now hard to see.

But still works great.

Ten round clip recently purchased does not work well.

Five round clips works okay.

Senior citizen recommends looking for synthetic stock .22 bolt action.

Wood stocks suck.

tdb is that you or your son's groups. not bad, at what distance? Is the CZ special simialr to the SCOUT? or does it have a longer bbl? paradidle, I second the CZ 452 & third the Charles Daly Superior II. Then you need to get a boat and homemade silencer. Does anyone know what the "poodle gun" was in the movie?

I looked hard at he Marlins (I have a pawnshop Model 60 that I love), but being cursed with a VERY dominant left eye I had to go with the CZ 452 American LH. It is as good as everyone says--everyone who's never shot an Anshutz, that is. I shot one a few weeks ago and there is just not any comparison. But if we normalize the data by cost, the CZ wins in a landslide. Even figuring in the price of the Automation Solutions sear, which all you CZ guys should go out and buy right now. (It makes the trigger 95% as good as the Anshutz, even though in comparison the action feels like it was assembled from mismatched parts and full of sand.)

I love my CZ!!

EDIT: I can't weigh in on the others mentioned. I'm leery of out-of-production magazine-fed guns, although there are no words for that first Winchester.

Another CZ452 fan. I have them in 22magnum & .17HMR, I gave m father one in .22 LR & my brother in law is picking up a left hand .22 in a couple of weeks.

New - CZ 452 or CZ 453

Used - Remington 581, 581-S or Remington 541-S, 541-T

I can't see any of the above rifles being a bad choice.

981T and buy a decent rimfire scope, all for your $350.

Unfortunately, Marlin doesn't see fit to offer something like the 983 or 983S (cut-checkered walnut/blue or laminate/stainless .22WMR) in the 981 series, so the CZ is prettier. But the Marlin barrel will shoot real straight and the price will leave money for optics. The tube feed keeps the underside of the stock clean for using on the bench.

IMO Marlin's rimfires are underrated.

And the CZ-453, nice as that trigger may be, is nowhere NEAR $350. The CZ-452 is $350+, and that's with no optics on it.

I'd consider getting the Marlin and a $200 scope. That will get you shooting with an accurate setup for a decent price. And if you get really into it, you can put the scope on a $500 or $1000 rifle later, too, and keep the synthetic-stock Marlin for uglier shooting situations, newbies, etc.:)

Is the CZ special simialr to the SCOUT?

Other than the action and trigger assembly, no. The Scout will have a shorter stock (of course), shorter barrel (about a foot shorter), hooded windage drift adjustable front sight, leaf elevation-only adjustable (rudimentary) rear sight. Front sight on the Training Rifle/Special/Lux/Ultra Lux is elevation adjustable on a dovetail rail and locked into place with a set screw, rear sight is ladder adjustable for elevation (and graduate) with the sight blade adjustable for windage using opposing screws to lock it into place.

The Auto Solutions sear is my standard drop-in. Even installed one into my second Ultra Lux last night (and lost 2 ball detents for the sear, luckily I had extra from the other AS sears I've installed in my other CZs). If Timney hadn't revised their trigger for the CZ, I'd be buying those instead (installed two into Varmints).
