Im looking to buy a 22LR bolt rifle.

I have a Mossberg 702 and an old Marlin 39A but neither one fires everytime i pull the trigger, regardless of how well i clean them.

I see this as a reason to buy a new rifle.
Id like it to be a bolt action, magazine fed if possible but im more worried about accuracy, good iron sights and price (top of the range is $250)

Ive looked at a few new ones at the local walmart, the savage Mark II with the accutrigger and bull barrel or possibly a cricket single shot (dont know the model of that)

just looking for a few suggestions about what companies produce a gun that would be in the price range, any personal first hand experience would be welcome as well.

thanks for your time.

I'm old school.I prefer older bolt action Marlins in either tube or magazine feed. They can be found at pawn shops, gun shops and gun shows for less than $100.00 if you look hard enough.Barring that I'd look at the CZ rifles already mentioned, but I have no personal experience with them(yet).YMMV.tom.

I bought a Tula TOZ-78. Truly outstanding accuracy (1" at 100yds) for the meager $150.00 price tag.

i like the toz and the cz, it is tough to get a new made bolt action with a fully adjustable rear site. Remmington will make one as well, but it will be expensive. also , I think T/C and Kimber may make one as well.

Have you ever thought about a Romanian training rifle? I own 2 of them and they are very accurate and reliable. Do a google for Romanian m1969 training rifle and see what you think.

Since your 39A doesn't fire all the time, I'd be interested in buying it for a parts gun. Let me know if you're interested in selling it.

Savage Mark II

My vote goes to the Savage Mark II. I was going through the same process a few months ago. Looking at all my options, even looking at semi-autos like the 10/22 and the Rem 597. I finally decided on the Mark II with the Accutrigger. The Accutrigger is a very nice set up. No creep, very predictable and quite smooth. Mine is the Mark II-BTVS. Stainless Steel bull-barrelled, with a thumbhole laminate stock. I've only had one chance to shoot it. Despite the fact that it was a somewhat windy day, I was still satisfied with the group size at 50 and 100 yards. Yes, I have it sighted in at 100 yards. Even with a good wind, I was reliably hitting a fist sized target. Not bad for just cheap, basic Federal bulk ammo. Its also a very nice handling gun. My favorite thing about it is that its very close in weight to my 30-06, so it makes for a good, free-hand shooting practice rifle. Unlike alot of these other rifles on the market that cant even break 6 pounds.

so thats my two cents. Good luck, there are a lot of good options out there..

Check the 39A firing pin

I have a new (old) 39A that would sometimes not fire at its first range session with me... just a few times but enough to check the FP which seemed visibly loose. Turned out the FP was broken but would fire most of the time unless it slipped out of alignment.
Marlin already has a replacement on the way.

your misfiring 22s: maybe a peened chamber. Someone on here had that theory on a revolver I have and sure enough when I looked closely they were right on the money. Not that I wouldnt use it as an excuse for a new rifle just dont discount them yet. Either a 20 dollar tool and a do it yourself or a quick trip to a smith may have them up and running again in no time.

I was going to say CZ452, but I have never seen any of those close to your $250 price limit.

I'd say fix the ones you have. Its probably something simple. Take it to a smith and see what they say.

Im ok with the 39 not working 100% considering that it is at least 50years old and was passed down to me when my grandmother passed away a few years ago. It will remain in the safe for my children and grandchildren to learn to shoot with and even teach them the proper way to clear a FTF but i will have a gunsmith check the firing pin
if there is no serial number on the gun how else could i tell the age of the marlin? or is it hidden somewhere not easily seen?

thanks for the advice

You can't go wrong with the Savage bolt action .22 rifles but I wouldn't get another of their late model autoloaders. Those are are joke.
The old model Autoloaders are classics.

Never tried the Acu trigger and don't like its looks but many swear by them.

Got my Mk II on sale and when I opened the box I found a scope that wasn't even supposed to have come with it, that was cool.

I didn't care for the balance so I took the opportunity to use the hollow butt stock as a storage for an extra clip, extra ammo, and a pull through, Even had room for a small lockblade pocket knife and some extra cord, all wrapped in cloth suitable for use as cleaning patches.
Been meaning to add a small bottle of Balistol as well.

It now balances just the way I like it.

CZ452, in before the rush of other people who are going to tell you to get....well a CZ452.

A CZ 452 Trainer ought to be within your budget. You might want to save up another $100.00 and buy the Lux. They come with a nice walnut stock.

I have a Savage Mark I and it shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards with Federal target and could probably do better if I used a good rest. Accutrigger is great. So I'm happy with my choice.

I would get the CZ 452 Trainer. In fact that is what I did over 5 years ago when they were known as the Special. Accuracy has completely exceeded my expectations with this $189 rifle. (in 2002)

I shot better with the CZ open sights compared with any other 22 rifle I had ever owned.

I later scoped it and the only 22 rifles I owned/own that shot better was a $675 Sako and then only with true match ammo and a Volquartsen barreled 10/22.

Another vote for the CZ 452.

Very accurate and with a little work on the trigger they are just a pleasure to shoot. Bought my first one last December. I have five now. Two of them in 17 HMR.

Cz 452

Can I chime in in favor of the CZ 452 American or Varmint, .22LR, .17 Mach II or .17 HMR.......I know they're not all .22s but they're rimfire at least.
