While flipping through the Cabela's shooting catalog I noticed caliber adapters that allow 22LR to be fired through a 223 chamber. I was thinking of buying one for my AR. How good do these things work?

Based on a couple of hundred rounds thru a Ceiner adapter in an Armalite, I'd say they work pretty well.

I was somewhat aggrevated to discover that the standard charging handle in the Armalite wouldn't work with the adapter & had to buy a second charging handle.

BTW, I got the adapter from Armalite. I'm thinking they might ought to have clued me in on the charging handle business while I was on the phone with them ordering the adapter. As it played out, I had to call them back, find out what the problem was & wait for the second charging handle to arrive before I could play with my new toy.

The .22 RF adapters have a tendency to decrease accuracy when compared to a realy .22 RF or an AR uper built with a true RF chamber. That said, there's no way you'll be able to beat the price of the adapter with a true RF upper. You should decide if you want pin point accuracy or just a fun blaster.

Ray, it sounds like you might be talking about the .22 chamber adapters, which encase the .22 in a fake case and adapt the firing pin force. These will not cycle the action automatically, but might feed from the mag manually.

I've never heard anything wrong with these. It's a simple concept and hard to screw up. It may be slow to deal with, though.

The Ciener and other AR adapters are self contained .22 auto actions that fit into the bolt carrier space and allow you to shoot semiauto. The reliability isn't usually as good as a dedicated .22 rifle (Ruger, Marlin), but can be decent.

As pointed out, the down side to either of these units is accuracy; the twist rate for .223 and .22LR are different. They are decent, just not tack drivers. Also, .22 leaves some crud in the gas system, but a fired .223 round will blow it out.

I've been thinking about getting a dedicated upper for my AR for a while now. You may want to check out AR15.com because they have a forum dedicated to rimfire and pistol calibers for AR's. IIRC, Fulton Armory and Kurts Kustom both offer dedicated .22LR uppers and I've read positive reviews on both.

Will they fit in all or just some ARs? I.e. can I get a Wilson conversion and it fit in both a Bushie or Colt?
