At our local range a half dozen members were shooting up steel targets mostly with S-W Victory .22LR with Red Dot sights. It seemed like a nice test of target acquisition and time.

I see it retails for $868. Are their other models, perhaps more affordable, used for this sport.

I am in need of education. Thank you, in advance, for your help.

Street price is about $100 less. Great handgun choice; the Victory is a great value. This particular model you indicate has all the bells and whistles. The base model can be had for under $300.

Other great pistols for ringing steel to consider are the Browning Buckmark and Ruger Mark IV.

You can find a Ruger Mk II/III/IV or a Ruger .22/45 pretty easy. Just make sure it's drilled and tapped for a mount. Not all the Mk II/III pistols were.

10" Ruger MK II followed by a MK II Government gets my vote. If Ruger money is ok to burn, I would take a MK II Great Eight.....Then, top the gun with a Burris Fast Fire III 3 MOA using the Burris mount.

My 10" isn't drilled and tapped. However I can mount an optic on either of my 10" Buckmarks. However the 10" barrel isn't ideal for speed steel.

Trailside, great pistols. Mine points perfectly for me, my Buckmark points high and loses time. Can be had for way less than $700. Mags are not cheap though.

The base SW22 Victory is much less than $800.00+.
Comes with a picatinny rail along with FO sights.
I don't know what kind of steel targets or range you're speaking of but a cheap red dot might work for you.View attachment 812229
Base gun and red dot ($24.00 on Amazon) was less than $400.00. This one has some TandemKross up grades.
Very accurate!

I love my Victory, and have "upgraded" it with a lot of goodies and a Votex Venom red dot sight for use with Steel Challenge Matches. Lots of internal and external updates.

I think I bought the base gun before the upgrades in the $300-400 range somewhere.

Here she is now, a really nice and accurate pistol that excels at steel matches:
