.22LR Plinkers?

@group17: I'm a pretty big guy with big hands so I'm looking for something a bit larger than a PPK sized weapon.

Now I'm thinking of getting the Ruger MkIII "Target" or "Hunter". Is there any difference in performance between the bull and the fluted barrels?

Still haven't been over my friends house to check out his Ruger.

No problem, Since your from Philly don't miss calling Tanner's sports center in Bucks County for the best price. You can play with all the Rugers you like at Cabela's in Hamburg.
Good shooting!

Difference would be minimal, in theory a fluted barrel will cool off faster, in practice you'll never notice the difference. A Fluted barrel will be a bit lighter than a bull barrel, obviously ... Personally I really like the balance of the 5.5" bull barrel, but the Hunter models sure are pretty!

But I'm thinking of going somewhere I can rent full-autos and use whatever ammo I can get my hands on.
1 - Most rental places make you use their ammo in their guns
2 - Perhaps some shooting on your own before moving to the advanced hardware is in order.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just pointing out that you need to walk before you run here. A .22 pistol is a GREAT training tool, develop good technique with that and then worry about moving up or trying out more exotic toys.

The target is a bull, heavier and more for target stuff. The hunter is fluted and a bit lighter, more for walk around stuff. I like the way the muzzel is crowned on the hunter and that it has a fiber optic front site. I'd jump on the stainless 4.5 hunter at $470 on Bud's site if it were me. I like that it's an overall quality gun and not too specialized.

You? Are you sure you legaly can even own a gun? Also, you can get in a lot of trouble if you take this too lightly. You buy a gun and fail the check, there's a restocking fee you will have to pay. And if you have a gun you can't legaly own, you and the person that you got the gun from are in trouble. Then, there's the responsability of safe gun ownership. Get your head right and your ducks in a row before you make that move. Good luck.

I'm 21 years of age, no criminal background, no background of mental illness. Yea I'm pretty sure I can own a gun. I've basically been off the grid for 2 or 3 years now.

Good for you! Not a fugitive from justice, (I always giggle when I check No on the background check to that one), or anything else. A .22 is perfect for a young fella. I wish you all the best on happy gun ownership. Here's a link to recent review on the one I like and a pic of my Mark II at the end. Keep us posted.
