Hi All
So if I wanted to get a 22 cal revolver what is avable now a days. Dose Smith still make the one they use to call the KitGun? I would like a double action in stainless steel. 3" out to maybe 6" barrel lenth. Any recomdations?

Thanks

WB, S&W makes a Model 63 w/ a 3" barrel and it's lightweight equivalent, the 317, also with a 3" barrel.

Current options are:
J frame S&W Model 63 (stainless) or 317 (aluminum) both with a 3 inch barrel.
K frame S&W Model 18 (4 inch blue), 17 (6 inch blue), & 617 (four or six inch stainless).
Ruger SP101 4.2 inch.
Taurus 990 Tracker.
Charter Arms Pathfinder.

Personally I would take any Smith or the Ruger.

S&W 617 6" in a 10 shot model is what I like. I like it so well I am to buy two more for my grandsons to have it is that great.

You should take a look at a Dan Wesson. Being built on a .357 frame they'll last forever. They are also extremely accurate.

I own the 18-3, 17-3 and 4" 10 shot 617. Very nice guns. I put a Burris FastFire red dot on the 617. It gets most of the range time, but I like the nostalgia factor with the older blue guns with the iron sights.

I have the Taurus Tracker, but I would not recommend it to anyone. Though, I got a good one, they seem to be hit or miss with their quality...I would go with a Ruger or Smith.

In stainless, there's shot-count and frame size to consider Also.

The Smith 617 is a 10-shot, but larger frame and pricey.

The Ruger SP101 is 8-shot and bigger then a small kit gun. Really a nice handling piece!

Both are fine guns.

In blue, consider the Smith 18, a great gun!

The small kit guns are not as accurate Ir as comfortable.

If you read posts in this forum on the 317 you will see a lot of people have problems with them for such an expensive 22 revolver. From what I have read I would think long and hard about buying one.

WildBillz, if you're still reading in and want a truly small kit gun style Ruger has also just announced their LCP in .22LR. Now THAT would be small ! ! ! !

If you don't like the plastic frame the other thought would be to get one of the SP101-22's and have a smith cut down and re-crow+ re-sight the barrel to 3 inches.

I prefer the feel of the L frame 686 over the smaller frame of the model 63 for range use. The action is also better on the 686.

I recently bought the Ruger SP101 in .22, very pleased with it.
So much so a week later I bought the new SP101 in .357 also!

If you're looking for a J frame the S&W Model 63 is a great revolver. If you want something bigger the S&W M617 will do but IMO it's too big and heavy at 44oz for what it is.

If you didn't require Stainless S&W has the 6" M17 and 4" M18 (37oz) in their Classic line in Blue and Walnut...

Ruger just re-released their SP101 in .22LR. It sports a 4.2" barrel and chambers 8 rounds. It's smaller than a K frame (but not by much) but it does weigh 30oz which is heavy. I think the M63 w/3" barrel weighs only 25oz and it carries better.

I couldn't stand the trigger on a 317 and my 94 froze up - so I traded them off.

For plinking I bought a SS Bearcat - SA but cute. I found beginners liked to shoot it.

I'm interested in the new LCR-22 as just a fun gun or introductory gun.

I've customized my .22 LR S&W revolvers - HiViz front sight on the 5" 63 and 4" 617 - wood grips on them all. The 5" 63 is no longer available new, unless you find some old stock. The 617 is still available in the 4" (shown) and 6" barrel length. The 3" 63 was new last year - what a fun revolver - comes with the HiViz front sight!

The 4" 617 is my absolute favorite - fantastic range revolver - and oldest of the trio. The upstart 3" 63 is catching up fast - great for toting - I bought an S&W/DeSantis leather holster for it (... also fits my 3" 60!). Great trigger. The 5" 63 is fine - but it has sentimental value, having belonged to a range buddy who passed away. Oddly, 36gr Fed WallyWorld 550 pack el-cheapo's get enough velocity from that massive 5" barrel to drop SPC plates the other two politely bump. The 3" 63 is just a fun size - and came with a VG DA trigger.

Some weeks back, a friend met me at the range with his new SP101 8-shooter - and I had my 3" 63 and it's 8 hole DS-10 Speedloader. He paid a premium to get 'the first' new Ruger - within a McD's "Happy Meal" cost of what I paid for my 3" 63 11/10 when it arrived. We both agreed the 63 is the better revolver... and the DS-10 speedloader would not mate up to the SP101.

The current Classic design 8 shot speed loader by DS-10-SPEED works with both S&W and the new Ruger 8 shot .22.

I had an S&W Model 617 stainless with a 6" full underlug barrel and it was way too heavy for field use and balanced poorly for me. So I looked at the new Ruger SP101 and the one I handled had a trigger that was gritty and heavy and I didn't care for the hi-viz front sight. I finally found a used S&W Model 17-3, K-22 Masterpiece in excellent condition for less than the models described above and with it's excellent trigger and accuracy, I've been very happy with it. They show up from time to time and are a good alternative to some of the new guns.
