I am looking for a scope for a 22lr build I am wanting to do in the next couple months and I don't know what scope power would be go I plan on using it for squirrel hunting and plinking. I have put the little rimfire scope and never like it at all and I been thinking about building a 22 and I don't know what scope I want it. I looked at a nikon Buckmaster 4-12x40 I didn't know it that was to much scope or not enough thanks

I especially like the Weaver 2.5-7x and 3-9x rimfire scopes. It depends on what the rifle is for me.

Be helpful to know what the "little rimfire scope" was that you didn't like and what sort of .22 you are planning to build.

I have a Nikon Prostaff 4X fixed power on a S&W 15-22 and a Nikon Buck Master 4x14 on a S&W AR 15. Both are excellent scopes.

I have a Remington 541S and have had 3 scopes on it; a Redfield Low-Pro 3-9X, a Leupold 2.5-7 rimfire and finally a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-8X. The last one is by far the best. That rifle killed about 25 squirrels this year in addition to 100s for the past almost 40 years i have owned the rifle. The first 2 scopes only stayed on the rifle for a year or two. Also have a Nikon Prostaff 3-9X on another rimfire, but can't beat the Leupold.

Bench? I'd get a 4-12X AO Leupold.
Hunting a rimfire version of 2-7X (or 4X fixed).

To save a few bucks I might get a Redfield Revolution 4-12X non adj objective and send it back to leupold/Redfield for parallax change to 50 yards (fixed). That's $25 plus shipping for the conversion.

I ran a reg Redfield Rev 2-7X on my 10/22. Think it'd be better to run a rimfire fixed 4X for stuff that's mostly shot offhand.

I have a Contender rifle with match bull bbl...........that one might get something up to 12X, for paper punching mostly.

My 4-12X AO Leupold sits on my .243 and aint going nowhere LOL

I thought the VX3 was 2.5-8X.

BTW, I looked at some old fixed 8X Leupolds with AO..........but prices on auction sites went stupid high.

Pops still has a VX3 3.5-10X 40mm with AO on his .22-250.
I had a VX2 3-9X w AO (full size).

They don't make either of those anymore.

Did have a compact 3-9X EFR............pretty nice. Those have gone up quite a bit!
Of course, I don't have either of those 3-9x with AO anymore...........

For a sporter/hunting/plinker .22 the Leupold 2x7 is a perfect match. They offer just enough power and are scaled for a .22. The glass is decent.

Here are a couple of mine.

I have both the Leupold 2-7x28 & Weaver 3-9X32 ao rimfire scopes . They are both good rimfire scopes for hunting & 50 yd. targets . I guess if I had to choose one it would be the Weaver .

I would want more power for 100 yd. targets , but I think you would sacrifice some FOV for hunting .

Optics Planet list best of the year rimfire target scope as the : Nikon Prostaff Rimfire II , 4-12x40 scope @ 139.95 .

OK for hunting at various ranges you will want variable magnification, and probably side focus. Those features are found in a few scopes that won't break the bank. I like the Mueller 8x32 Target scope or the Mueller APV 4x16 (doesn't have side focus).

I have a Nikon 4X and a Leupold 4X. Both excellent. Inside of 200 yards, those 4Xs work great for me. I have made 1-shot kills on woodchucks at 170 yards.

Remember that you need a dedicated .22 scope or one with an adjustable to be time or side focus. Centerfire scope have parallax set for 100 yards. For close range shooting you may not be able to focus down enough. I have a Mueller on my 540xr target rifle. It is ok but a Nikon, Weaver, or Redfield would be better.

Many centerfire scopes have parallax set at 150 yards.

Side focus might be handy, but I've never had a problem running adj obj on the front of a scope.

You'll probably have it set for short, and if a long shot comes, have time to adjust it.

Shoot a while and it becomes second nature. And you'll develop muscle memory too.

Quick flick and boom.

Old Leupold AO used to go down to 25 yards (non EFR).
Could buy a 50 ft adapter to screw in (since AO fronts threaded for sunshade).

Many moons ago I picked up a Simmons compact 2-7X with AO and target turrets.
Let it go on a Ruger DSP.

Have never seen one since.

Wouldn't mind a Leupold 6X w AO, or even an 8X AO.
For my hvy bbl .22 TC Contender rifle.

The scope I had was a Tasco rimfire scope never could get it zeroed in but it just something I mess with on my old winchester 190. If I spend the money and build one I'm thinking about I want a better scope I look at the nikon Buckmaster and the pro staff and I have looked at some bushnell Trophy hunter

I have a 4x Tasco on one of my 22 rifles. It always did the job. But as mentioned above, if I were buying a new scope it would be Weaver for moderate ranges or typical 22 rifle use. I like them better than the Leupolds as they have solid click adjustments and a slightly thicker crosshair than the Leupold rimfires. Have Weavers on three 22 rifles.

Have the Mueller 4.5-16x AO on my CZ 452 Varmint. It is a bit big to lug around in the woods as far as I'm concerned.

I will note that ALL of my 22 rifles have full inch tube scopes on them. I always buy rimfire scopes for rimfires (except for the Mueller AO). Grew up with a little rimfire scope and bought a larger diameter scope on my first time to bat when I was 15ish. Rifle was at 14, bought the scope later.

Another vote for the Weavers -- great little scopes for the money. If you want to go up the ladder, go for Leupold. If you want to save a little money, check out the Muellers.

I don't believe you will be disappointed with any of those scopes -- it's just a question of how much you want to spend to get something "a little bit better."

I shoot my 22's to 300 yds so I use what I would use on any other caliber rifle I own. I use bush bell and nikons and recently purchased a 22 rim fire by Nikon with BDC reticles for my CZ 22 magnum. It is awesome!!!

I have a 4-14x40 VX-3 AO on my CZ .22. Lot of scope for the rifle, but I got it in a swap deal. Ended up on this rifle 'cause that's the scope I had and it fit. Turns out it is a great match. Rifle is ultra accurate (.2's @ 50 years with match ammo)

These scopes have great field of view and are ultra clear. As noted in other threads, these are 1/2 price at cabelas until end of the year.

The Weaver rimfire scopes are good. The Leupolds are even better. A fixed 4x is a good all around scope for most rifles. A 2-7x might be better when you need to shoot small game at 100yds. Bigger variables for target work. I use a fixed 24x for my rimfire load testing.

Parallax can be a real issue with big centerfire variables shooting at 50yds. I've never had much problem with fixed 4x and variables up to 4x but more than that, you will see it. Better to either get it reset to 50yds or buy one with parallax adjustment.
