230 Gr. XTP HP Load

Hello All,

New member, First time post!, I am looking for the loading data on a 45ACP 230 Grain Hornady XTP HP using Hodgdon HS-6.

You might have to keep looking. Didnt see it on Hodgdons site. How about H-110 or Win 296?

I personally don't use HS-6 for .45 ACP 230g. but I found a couple of recipes on ammoguide you could try.

230g HP/XTP Hornady 8.0g HS-6 OAL of 1.200

230g Speer 7.8 to 8.4 HS-6 OAL 1.260

I normally use W231, HP-38, and Bullseye for this caliber.

I have used 8.8g. of HS-6 for a 200g SWC Berry with an OAL of 1.270 that works well.

Hodgdon only shows data for the Hornady 230 Gr TrFP, which is a totally different type bullet.

I have no idea why they do not show some data for a typical 230 Gr JHP.

Speer #13 gives a start load of 7.8 Grs HS-6 for 773 FPS, and a max load of 8.5 grs HS-6 for 863 FPS for 230 Gr ball and 7.2 to 8.0 (702 & 799 FPS) with their 230 Gr Gold Dot bullet.

We have some HS-6 fans here, so I am sure they can help.

What load book do you have?

I only looked on Hodgdons site. Too lazy to go to my shop and look at books.

7.2 gr HS-6 700 FPS bullet 45160, COL 1.23"
7.6 gr HS-6 750 FPS bullet 45160, COL 1.23"
8.0 gr HS-6 800 FPS bullet 45160, COL 1.23"
8.4 gr HS-6 850 FPS bullet 45160, COL 1.23"
8.7 gr HS-6 900 FPS bullet 45160, COL 1.23" HAS RED IN COLUMN

Thanks Everyone, I have a book from Hodgdon (more of a magazine), the Lee Reloading Book, and the Sierra Reloading Manual, along with a Vhitahouri Manual. I suppose the Hornady Book would be a wise investment.

olefarmerbuck - I didn't think you could use H110 or 296 with a 45acp. I have to look into that.

WW296 and H110 are way too slow burning a powder for the 45ACP...

John, pick a copy of Lyman's Pistol Reloading Guide. It has much good info and lots of pistol loads compared to other manuals. HP38/231, Unique & Bullseye are the cat's meow for the 45 & 230s in my experience.

Lyman's Guide., okay....will do....you know I've been slowly reloading for about two years and all my powders have been Hodgdon. Guess it's time to expand my menu!

Hodgdon Universal Clays and Hodgdon Clays are excellent powder for 45 ACP 230gr LRN and 45 ACP 200gr LSWC.
