i have a savage youth 243 rifle for my kids to hunt and shoot. My boy has out grown it and my girl started hunting this year. I make home loads for just about all my rifles. She is very hesitant shooting the loads I made for my boy. 95 gr sst with max load of h4831sc. So I bought a box of hornadys lite recoil and she can handle them. Well the box is almost gone so it’s time to load. Would any powder at a light load weight reduce recoil or are certain powders just lower recoil? I’m not so worried on fps as she probably won’t be shooting much over a couple hundred yards. Thanks

This would be better in the reloading forum but since we are here, if I were looking to accomplish this I would pick one of the faster burning powders listed for 243 and try the starting load listed in the manual. I would use an extruded powder as in my experience ball powders tend to like a full case, whereas extruded powders will shoot well even with air space in the case.

If you want to stick with that same 87 grain bullet I would try starting with 32 grains of RL15, or 33 grains of H4895

87 gr. Vmax with a moderate charge of a faster powder like RL 15 , H380, Win 760 or Imr 4350

Hodgdon lists 4895 as a powder that is safe to be loaded as low as 60% of max recommended weight for a particular bullet That is a great accuracy powder in a 243Win. Put the bullet in the right place and it'll get the job done.

H4895 with an 85 gameking, partition, or speer (this one's real soft) or any decent 90ish pill that shoots straight should so well.

For targets, step down to a lighter bullet and use Hogdon reduced load data. Bullet weight is more important than velocity for recoil management.

Can anyone tell me load data on the 95 gr sst, can I use the h4895? It isn’t listed in my book but it’s a couple editions old , I really don’t feel like dropping $30 to see. Thanks

This is a Nosler bullet. But it will be a starting point Screenshot_20181231-184957.png

For my 9 year old granddaughter I used 28g h4895 with a 95g SST. It shot extremely soft and was about 1-1/2 group at 100 yds. Never shot a deer with it but Hornady told me to keep the bullet above 2200fps and it would work good.
