Hi there, i have just got a savage .243 i wonder if anyone has this same rifle and knows of factory ammo that performs accurately, for mostly smaller game/varmints and will double as a light bodied deer (sika, fallow) round, least until i get some brass for reloading?

Not so worried about frangable bullets as small game etc will be well away from a built up area.

Thanks in anvance.

I reload and have my own recipe's for light and heavy bullets for .243.

That being said, the only factory ammo I have put through my Savage has been the Remington Core-Lokt in 100 gr. Very good ammo, good accuracy, I think I have been able to do a little better with my loads, and at a much better price, but from my experience the Remington ammo has been good. I think they also offer it in a lighter 80 gr. load as well.

Once I saw the results of loads with the Sierra 85-grain HPBT, that bullet has been pretty much my "do all" load. Varmints, and smaller deer to 200 yards; mostly neck shots. I tried a box of the Federals with that bullet. It's as accurate in my Sako carbine as my handloads; reliably and regularly sub-MOA.

I used the Federal blue box 80gr on a recent hunting trip, i had very good results on 2 Fallow deer both shot within 150 metres, both hit mid shoulder, neither moved after being hit. Bang Flop.
Found part of one projectile under the farside skin, weighted 21 gr, shoulder meat damage was profound.

Tracked the projectile down to Speer part # 1211 Hot cor Spitzer, Only to find its no longer in production - replaced by the "deep curl". Went and bought all the Speer 80gr 1211's that i could find.

Thanks Kelem

my reloads

I've been loading the 62gr varmint grenades and they shoot real nice
39 gr h335
And the 95 gr barnes x bullets that were gave to me shoot about an inch on average but still need to work those up. 43gr rl19

I use ADI AR2208 Powder (Varget) for my reloads with Speers 75gr HP (#1205)
I am going to search for a sort of do all in the future maybe something like the Seirra 85gr HPBT to use on varmint and smaller deer.

Possibly the Hornady 87gr HPBT. time and testing will tell
