I've had several makes of scopes over the years, but consider the Leupold VX2 3-9x to have the best optics and adjustments under $400. It's also lighter than most scopes that power. Get the Wide Multi-Plex, which has a wider fine crosshair area that the standard Multi-Plex, so it's better for long shots and targets.

I wound up getting a Redfield Revolution 3-9x40 over the Vortex Diamondback I intended to buy. After comparing the Revolution, the Diamondback and a Prostaff side by side, I put the other two back and went with the revolution. To my eye, the Revolution sported image quality slightly better than the other two, along with excellent eye relief.

The Prostaff had good clarity, but kind of turned me off with the plasticky adjustment knob covers and overall feel. I imagine it would be tough enough, but when the competition is that close, general workmanship and feel can be a deciding factor. The specific Diamondback I was looking at had a whiteish-silvery tinge that crept into the field of view at times... I think it may have been light from the store's skylight, but neither of the other scopes had this problem. I wanted to look through another non-display Diamondback, but, as it turned out, the display model was the last one in the store.

firme67, have you made your scope choice yet?

Not yet, waiting until I can get to Cabelas and look at their selection. Have a bunch of gift certificates from X-mas, so that is where I will buy mine. Thanks to all who have posted other online places to buy, I may have to try that in the future. I sure am getting antsy to take the new rifle out and sight it in, if only there were more hours in the day......

My Dad bought this .243 rifle in 1968. It has worn several scopes since then but BEST and current scope is Simmons AETEC featuring 2.8X to 10X magnification. I paid about $135. for it at cheaperthan dirt about 10 years ago.

Made my choice....Thanks everyone for the suggestions. After looking at the Vortex Viper, Leupold VX2, and Buckmaster, I chose the 3-9x40 Buckmaster w/BDC. To me it had the clearest sight picture of all three. Thank goodness we live in a country where we all have choices Now to get out and get her sighted in.
