.270 with 140gr Nosler Accubond (.496bc) at 3,000fps or 130gr Nosler Ballistic Tip at 3,150 = better than .25-06 with anything. There are a lot more choices for higher BC bullets in .277 than in .257 - berger have just released 3 .277" VLDs, a 130 with a .48something BC, 140 at .510 and a 150 at .545.

The real difference is bugger all though, especially for hunting purposes

The 25-06 has been intriguing me alot in the past few years. There's no doubt I will own one someday just not sure when! Maybe they will have some 125 or 130 grain longrange bullets available by then!?!

I had a Weatherby Vanguard VGX in .25-06. It was one of my most accurate rifles.

For varmints, use either 75 or 87 grain projectiles. For medium sized game such as deer, 95 or 100 grain partitions are great. Larger game can be taken easily with the 115 or 120 grain projectiles.

The .257 caliber was Mr. Weatherby's favorite caliber of projectile. His, though, was a .257 Weatherby Magnum, which he even used to harvest a cape buffalo once.

Good luck.

I have been killing deer with my Remington 700 .25-06 for 26 years with 100, 115, and 120 grain bullets. The 100 gr ballistic tips shoot really great and have never had a problem dropping deer. I have not shot the lighter weight varmint bullets, but has been one heck of a deer rifle.

There is not a 270 winchester on the planet earth that can shoot as flat as a 25-06... with the same BC bullets

lets compare the best of the best bullets of the 270
.277 Berger 130 VLD at 3200 fps .480 bc
.277 Berger 140 VLD at 3100 fps .510 BC
.277 Berger 150 VLD at 3000 fps .545 bc

Compared to the 250-06
.257 Berger 115 VLD at 3200 .522 BC

(yes my 25-06 EASILY does 3200 fps with the 115 Berger no pressure signs, brass reloaded lots of times per load)

sure the bigger bore per same case is always more efficient, and will shoot same weight bullets faster.
we know a 300 win mag is the same case as a 458 win mag, but who on earth thinks the 458 shoots flatter than the 300 win mag?

In my humble opinion, The 270 and 25-06 are about the same all around, and both are excellent hard hitting flat shooting rounds. but if we are going to nit pick down to the little bit, I'll go on..
Both will kill Deer and Varmints about the same, the 270 with it's heavier slugs would be better for mousse or elk, but neither is suited for the task.

Do a ballistics cheek on the above rounds and bullets..
The 270 does not have the velocity of the 25-06 does at range, the 270 has a RAINBOW trajectory compared to the 25-06 having a laser beam trajectory.

even at 50 or 600 yards the 25-06 VLD with the above bullets is FASTER than ANY of the 270 VLD bullets

neither the .277 or .257 have great bullets for long range..
the 6mm and 6.5 mm are much much better..
the `6mm 105 Berger VLD .545 bc or the 6.5mm Berger 140 VLD at an Astounding .640 bc makes the .277 140 VLD look like it has a parachute tied to the back of it for the same weight comparison.

back to the 25-06 vs 270... look at the charts below..
All 4 loads have 1000 ft lbs at 700 yards...the 150 .277 vld load has 1000 ft lbs at 800 yrds.. but we are not talking Moose loads. we are comparing speed, flat shooting, and wind bucking.

velocity/trajectory and wind drift--- the 25-06 HANDS down kills the 270 in ALL respects.

SORRY eldon519 and gimposaurus there is not a 270 load on this planet that can shoot as flat with less wind drif.
if you want to go down in bullet weight, let me know... the 25 will still kill the 27 ... only in ft lbs can the 270 slightly outperform the 25-06.
Have a good day
scottyd

I love my .25-06, I wouldn't be without one. Great cartridge. I dropped many a whitetail and groundhog with mine before I moved away from PA. Great antelope and deer cartridge for the West too and also great for coyotes when it's windy and the .223 isn't enough.

Sorry Eldon, from Remingtons website

The 243 has less power, less energy, more drop then the 25-06

I believe the 25-06 would be more a flat shooting rifle than a 243, per case size, the 6mm-06 (24-06) would have better long range trajectory than the 25-06.
A 105 grain Berger VLD from a 6mm-06 or 6mm-284 can be launched at 3400 fps The 25-06 might be able to get 3500 with a 100 grain, but we are comparing velocity of the equivalent or as close to so Ballistic coefficient bullet
For Example a 25-06 can launch a 115 Berger VLD at 3200 fps
a 6mm-06 could launch a 95 Berger VLD at 3600 fps..
The 115 grain .257 Berger VLD has a BC of .522, the .
The 95 grain . 243 Berger VLD has a bc of .524 and
the 105 grain .243 Berger VLD has a BC of .565

However in defense of the 25-06, the .257 115 is a little heavier than the 6mm 105, more suited for larger deer.. also
the Thin skinned Bergers lose accuracy if driven much over 3200 fps..
The 6mm Berger 115 VLD has a BC of .597, pretty impressive,, but required a 1:7 twist, and an 06 case or equiv (6mm-284) would be hard pressed to get 3000 fps out of a 26 inch tube, and the 1:7 or 1:8 twist would limit velocity as bullet would spin jacket off if driven too fast..

The standard 25-06 1:10 twist will handle the 115 grn .257 Berger VLD fine

These are great bullets..
I shoot them a lot.. My Best Friend has a 22-250 Winchester with 26 inch bbl, he swears the speed of the cartridge is what makes it so devastating.. and it is a nice round..he brags about his 45 grain factory loads that do a blazing 4000 fps!

I tell him, but no animal on earth is going to walk up to the muzzle and only at the muzzle does it do 4000 fps..
those 45's have poor BC drag, something around .162 BC..
By 200 yards, my 25-06's 115 VLD Bergers launched at 3200 fps are still traveling 2800 something fps, while his 45's launched at 4000 fps from the 22-250 are only traveling 2700 something fps at 200 yards He refuses to believe it.

I talked him into getting the 50 grain ballistic tip loads at 3800 fps, much better Bc drag.
he has two 22-250's. his shots are from 50-250 yards.
and most are 150-200 yards.(coyotes)
So muzzle vel means squat. Vel at range is what you want, and the VLD's will deliver!

I fell in love with the 25-06 in the late 1980's, my late friend who had a shooting range had one... a Ruger hvy 24 in bbl with a 6.5-20 40mm Lpld scope.
I at the time had a win 300 win mag...
.
As my old late friend Ed with his 25-06 and another 12-14 bench rifle helped me along.. He got me into accuracy.

I could never get more than 1 moa avg from that 300 mag.. even aft we bedded it and so forth.

was loading 125's, but could NEVER get em the speeds of his 25-06 with 75's Sierra's 80's (Brunos) and 85-87's
His 25-06 would print 1.5 to 2 inch groups at 400 yards all day long. His Friend Louie Who had a Ruger no# 1 in 257 Roberts, also would print 1 inch groups at 400 yards.
They loved the .257 bore, and refused to more to the 6mm or 6.5mm and wanted to make the 25 work.. a challenge I guess. They also had 308's 35 Welon, 17 rem, 45-70 and many others, but they loved the 257's
.
In 1994 I bought me a 25-06, I had not seen Ed in months as I had been busy working... I bought a Ruger like his, except mine was a 26 inch bbl, same Leupold scope, except mine had a 50mm obj,, bedded it, worked up some loads.

I went out to his home in the country, and he had passed away 2 days earlier from a heart attack. 72 yrs old (I was 29 or 30 then)

I never got to show him my 25-06.. He was a big heavy set man, all of the family was, they ate a lot of good food, and always insisted I ate with them if I went to the range.. It was GREAT.

When I see any 25-06 I think of him.

Sorry for the long post, I had to give my good late friend, Ed Hall some credit for introducing me to this fire breathing round!

Scotty

I am pretty please with what mine will do at 100 yrds. I pulled the one shot but that is a decent 5 shot group.

25-06 is a good round, lots of fun and somewhat unique. Seems like most of the quarter bore crowd tends to be that way. Just ask the 257 Roberts guys.
