In my guncase, which came from my dad but was his dads also, i found a bunch of .25 cal cartridges. I know the Japanese used them in WW2 but these look american. I would be interested to know what rifles used this cartridge.

rifle or pistol? .25 auto is a little wimpy automatic psitol round, kind of like a more reliably feeding .22rf, but weaker

The Japenese never used a .25 caliber weapon in WWII.
They used 6.5x50MM, and 7.7x58MM rifles.
7mm, & 8mm pistols, and a 9mm revolver.

Much more info is needed to ID what you might have.

Any headstamp markings, or even a picture would help.

Some American possibilities include:
25 ACP
25-20 WCF
25 Remington
25-35 Win.
250 Savage
256 Newton
256 Winchester Magnum
257 Roberts
25-06 Rem.
257 Weatherby

And a whole host of wildcat and obsolete black-powder .25 calibers.

Yup. Headstamps and pictures are what it will take to give somebody here a fair chance of identifying the ammunition.

Of course the Japanese service rifles are true 6.5mm with .264" (or larger) bullets, but thousands and thousands of GIs were fairly certain they were shot at with ".25 Japs." You are not going to be real careful measuring a captured enemy rifle that has what looks like a quarter inch hole in the muzzle.
