.25 TCR- It Begins!

The problems I've had with modern .22rf seem to date to the great shortage and likely QC related. I recently fired through an inherited stash also, various brands ranging from a lot of 1980s Federal Lightning and misc small batches from 1950s through 90s. Some even showed signs of poor storage, water staining on cardboards, and with the exception of a few obviously corroded rounds I discarded, all was absolutely reliable. I also shot through (painfully) a bulk box of Remington Tbolt and it was all over the place. No dead rounds, but numerous clearly underpowered. This box was purchased in the height of the shortage. Had similar issues with some small batches of Fed and Win cheap ammo from the same time. Other cheap ammo purchased after the shortage has been fine.

I'm curious as to what you'll use for a barrel, or do you possess a broaching bench as well? Donor barrel or bore through and sleeve?

Initially I'll button-rifle a barrel for the test-gun- I can do a barrel around 4" with what tools I have on-hand. I'll be making or adapting a revolver some time after that; we'll have to see how it goes. I plan to make a rolling-block single-shot rifle in this caliber as well, and that will certainly be based on a commercial barrel.

Interesting. The Sears stuff was made by Federal... albeit fifty years ago. I've heard about a lot of problems with modern 'bulk' ammo from Remington, Winchester and Federal.
Yeah, the bulk modern stuff is what I "bulked up" with after the crisis, pun intended. It could be quality control, or lack thereof, to try to meet demand after 2015 or so. They probably figure it's going to get burned up toot-sweet.
Back to topic, I'd live to see a quarter bore, center fire, .22 magnum replacement that's moved out of the wildcat zone.
