.250 Savage case forming

I have been unable to find a lot (500 cases) for use in my Savage model 14 in 250 Savage. So I have been trying to find other cases that can be formed in one step. I know that cases can be formed from others such as a .300 Savage from .308 Winchester brass by just using a .300 Savage sizing die (i know someone that does this will great success). I did some research and it seems that I can use .243 Winchester or .260 Remington cases for this. Can someone tell me: which cases to use, the process (hopefully one step other than fire-forming to final dimensions) and any equipment recommendations?

I've used 22-250 cases with no problems. I worry about neck thickness when changing neck diameter but they worked out fine. Shouldn't surprise me I guess since the "250" in 22-250 is the parent case. Just run them through the sizer after lubing and you are good to go.

I have done a little more research and I have seen dies for forming 250 savage cases from 30.06 and 308 but they are really expensive. I did check dimensions for the 22-250. The dimensions are close but I am a little concerned about the length.

The length will be shorter, but not a major problem. I would buy a few 22-250 now and wait for 250 Savage brass when it becomes available. Odd caliber brass is only made every few years. Contact the manufacture or Midwayusa, they maybe able to tell you when more will be produced. Google this to find brass >

I looked at Midway for Winchester brass and I had some on back-order with them for over 6 months. Previous to that I had been watching for some and it kept getting pushed out later. I know they do not make them often and in the current atmosphere I would expect it to take longer but I have been waiting for almost a year. I am going to attempt to get some Remington cases from another source. I was hoping to get some so I guess this post was an attempt at getting brass another way. I wanted to avoid case-forming dies because of the expense. If I had to use them I would. Thank you for the help.

I did a quick Google for 250 Savage brass and this link shows it in stock. An email or call should confirm one way or another.

If you cannot find any, it should be an easy transition from 22-250 to the parent 250 Savage(250-3000) by pushing the shoulder back with your 250 Savage FL die. Especially if you take the time to anneal the brass properly before forming, if you have trouble.

Thank you. I also found some Remington Brass in a lot of 500 at Cabelas. I think I will get that. It is still interesting to think about how to form the brass from another size.

In .380, I noted that the remington brass was a bit softer than winchester brass......I do not know if the same is true of their rifle brass. As usual, work upwards to your load.

Thank you for your responses. While I am still interested in the process for case forming for the 250 savage, I have found a lot of 500 cases and I have them. I purchased Remington cases even though I would have liked to get Winchester. In my limited experience with loading and shooting, Winchester cases seemed to allow a few more reloads before they have to be replaced. I guess since I purchased 500 cases I will not have to worry about more cases for some years to come.....
