Forming 22-250 from 250 savage

I am relatively new to reloading and currently loading for my rem 700 22-250. After mentioning this to my neighbor not long ago he decided to give me his stash of new 250 savage rem brass. This brass is brand NEW! I have necked down a few cases, it is not as hard as i thought it would be. My real question is if the necks will have to be turned with one of those neck tools. Also, is case capacity lost with a 250 savage case?

If anyone has done this I could use some insight of the procedures involved. Is it worth the time or should i just sell the brass and buy 22-250 cases.

Save yourself some trouble. Sell the .250 brass and buy new .22/250. You may also discover that you can get a premium price for the .250 cases.

Case forming can be a rewarding part of reloading.

As far as needing to turn the necks, it depends.

Measure the neck of a bunch of loaded rounds with 22-250 cases. Then measure a bunch of loaded reformed 250 Savage cases. I'd measure at the mouth and then down towards the shoulder.

Those measurement, along with the SAAMI drawing of the chamber will tell you if you need to turn the case necks.

Better yet, get a casting of your chamber to tell you how much space you have.

If you know some one interested in the 250 Savage cases, it could be easier to sell them and buy 22-250 cases.

Agreed, I would bet that there is someone who would love to have the .250 brass, especially if it is new. I think the brass is very important to a rifle loader, so keep the same headstamp and neck tension for accuracy.

I have formed a bunch of 250 savage cases to 22-250 in my FL sizing die before running them through my lee neck sizer (it helps). Then I trim them to the correct length 1.902~1.903". They all mic. 1 to 3 thousands under SAAMI specs even with bullets seated. Ill have to try some min loads next i guess.

It sounds like your on track, those rounds are so close it should work out,start low and work up. Good luck!

.250 brass is hard to come by and only available once a year. I'd sell it and buy the much more plentiful .22-250. I would be interested in it, PM me the details and asking price.
