I know these threads pop up all the time, but just wondering if I can get some ideas on good deals for $250. I've been looking hard at used S&W .38s (Model 10 or 64), but just want a few other ideas to make sure the .38 is really what I want. Rifles, pistols, shotguns all welcome.

You seem to be looking for everything... What do you already have? Will that 250 go further in making your current stuff more useful to you? Are there any holes in your "collection"?

If you can find one, an FEG Hungary P9R is an excellent semiauto in that price range. Fit and finish on it may not be the same level as a smith, but it sure thinks it's one. That is my only semi I have never had any sort of failure with.

What I do when this happens is just go to the local shops and see if there's anything that catches my eye that day.

Go for a CZ82. AIM Surplus or J&G Sales both have them. Really nice pistol for around 200-220. AIM has free shipping. They are C&R eligible as well.

If you want a rifle then pick up a Swiss K31. Around 250 for a really nice one. They are sweet shooting rifles.

+1 on ...

This is a great idea. If you can do it you will get much more out of it than you put into it. It can & will pay off in many ways.

Stick with your original idea of a S&W Model 10 (heavy barrel) or similar .357 k frame because they are fun to shoot, could be carried concealed, duable, economical to shoot and their value is going thru the roof!! Not long ago $250 was a high price for a blue model 10 HB now they are hard to find below $350 at a gunshow or via private sale and I commonly see them in the $400 - $500 price range which is absurd. Check out www.jgsales.com who has some nice S&W model 64 (.38spl stainless bobbed hammer, heavy barrel, DAO) police trades in your price range. Also on Gunbroker a few weeks ago there were some Austrailian police trade-in S&W model 65 stainless .357s in that price range. I'll take a gun with an interesting history over a safe queen any time if the price and condition are right.

I wouldn't want any handgun for $250

Long guns, sure. Used 870, a Savage MkII, maybe a couple Mosins

Well, if you can find a used S&W for 250 I'd say thats a good deal. I think I'd probably end up buying 50 rounds of high quality defense ammo for my favorite gun, 50-100 rounds of range ammo for the same gun, and an expensive bottle of burbon or scotch with whats left over :D :D

(((Not to be used with the ammo, of course)))

$250.00

Put the $250.00 down on a good gun at Martin B Retting pay it off in 60 days.

What do you currently have? No point in recommending something you currently have covered.
