CAUTION: The following post includes loading data not currently published for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

I found some 250grXTP's today for a steal. So I bought them. Yeah I know they are .452, but that's okay. So I broused around the ol' internet for a few hours searching for some load info that I could verify with more than one source.

Didn't find any, but allaint published a 260gr load using 4.5 grs of bullseye max. So I knocked off ten percent and loaded up some test loads starting from 4.0grs to 4.4grs in increments of 0.1 grs.

Anywho, I took my springer GI 5", with a 20lb recoil spring to the range and tried'em out.

4.0: no pressure signs; barrel was cool;); cases drop at feet
4.1: no signs; barrel midly warm after 5 rounds; cases went about 3 feet
4.2: no signs; warm barrel; cases went bout 7 feet
4.3: no signs; warmer barrel; cases went bout 7 feet
4.4; no signs; noticable heat; cases went 7 feet

Notes: OAL 1.18", primer CCI300, cases Federal .893" length once fired, Powder Bullseye 4.0-4.4grs.

I dont have a chrony, but will be getting one; will post info.

P.S. :Dthe five rounds at 4.4grs were scary accurate: 1" group offhand at 15 yards. It'll go wherever ya put it.

Use at your own RISK, but here's some data for your 250 Horn.XTP bullet in a 45ACP from Midway's LoadMap Series from 1997:
case used Remington
primer used RP 2 1/2
overall length 1.275"
5" HS Precision test barrel
Bullseye powder----start 3.9-563fps-13800psi
-------------------4.1------596----14700
-------------------4.3------629----15700
-------------------4.5------662----16600
-------------------4.7------695----17600
-------------------4.9------728----18600
-------------------5.1------761----19500
Use extreme caution at 5.1 grains or above! The Midway LoadMap 45ACP manual also lists loads for Blue Dot, Herco, Unique, Hodgdon Clays, HS6, IMR 700X, and Win 231 powder using Hornady's 250 XTP bullet. Shorter overall lengths will raise pressure as well as other brand cases or primers. Midway tested this bullet at the maximum overall length recommended for 45ACP. Just for more info!

I shot a bunch of 250 Gr Raniers left over from .45 Colt in .45 ACP. Worked fine. 5.0 Grs of W-231. I have no idea if this is safe pressure wise, but they shot well and recoil was pleasant.

OAL

my springer GI won't feed at full length. It won't even feed 250XTP's at 1.200"

1.180 is still a little long. so i gotta find a workable length.

It's wierd, I guess the bullet profile won't allow for reasonable OAL.

O well, the rounds are still fun and accurate:D

No data for the 250 Hornady XTP using Accurate powder in Midway's LoadMap. They do test #2, 5, or 7 with most all the other bullets and weights.

Midway LoadMAP .45 ACP

Hornady 250 Gr XTP @ 1.275 O.A.L.

700X
3.8 to 4.6 in the green. 4.8 starting to get yellow, as is 5.0. 5.2 and 5.4 are yellow, with 5.4 being the top of yellow. 5.6 is in the Red.

Herco
5.3 to 6.3 in the green. 6.5 to 6.9 in the greenish yellow. 7.1 and 7.3 in the yellow, with 7.3 at the top of the yellow. 7.5 & 7.6 in the Red.

Blue Dot
8.1 to 9.3 in the green. 9.5 to 9.9 in the greenish yellow. 10.1 to 10.5 in the yellow, with 10.5 at the top of the yellow. 10.7 & 10.8 in the Red.

Quote from Midway: USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN LOADING IN THE YELLOW OR RED ZONES

Remember, Midway used a max O.A.L. to get pressure and data. Reduce as needed when loading shorter.

Midway's LoadMap lists loads in green from start and as loads and pressure goes up the background color is light green then yellow. A hash line is between the yellow zone and red. They warn to use extreme caution loading with data in the yellow or red.
250 Hornady XTP
RP case and Primer
overall length tested 1.275" (shorter will raise pressure)
Herco 5.7-635fps-13500psi 6.1-690-15100 6.5-745-16600 6.9-800-18200
7.1-827-19000psi
Blue Dot 8.5-619-13200 8.9-673-14500 9.3-727-15900 9.7-781-17200
10.1-835-18600 10.3-862-19300
IMR 700X 4.2-604-13800 4.4-637-14800 4.6-670-15800 4.8-703-16900
5.0-736-17900 5.2-769-18900
I didn't list loads at the top of the yellow zone nor none in the red zone. Red zone loads are above 19000 psi and into the 20000 psi range.

Found he perfect XTP load in 45ACP for the back country

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data not currently published for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

Load recipe:
Federal brass trimmed to .893"
CCI 300 primers
Accurate No. 7 - 9.6 grains
250 grain Hornady XTP bullet seated to 1.155"
Crimped lighty

Notes: pressure is reasonable, but is quite on the warm side. Velocity is calculated at around 860fps, but a chrony is a must. some cases do come out battered and there are some flattened primers. However, after 10 rounds the barrel is only mildly warm. Loads were shot into soaked magazines, and slugs were recovered with full expansion at 25yards (round should be good on critters over 250+ lbs)

P.S. : I pulled some of the bullets i loaded out of curiosity because i wanted to measure their diameter after crimping. They were .451" after Being seated and ran through a Lee factory crimp die. Thought this would be interesting to know.
