Any help with info on known data or proven data foe either 85gr nosler sbt or 85gr cast FN

What platform are you shooting it through? Ruger Hawkeye, Marlin 62, or Contender?Something more exotic? I’m going to assume contender because the 85gr in any variety is too long for the Marlin magazine and the gun isn’t really easy for adults to single load. The Hawkeye was scarce and they are collectible now, so not many are getting shot.

I have at least 1 book that lists .256 winmag so I can look up data tomorrow.

What is your source for brass?

My Nosler manual lists no 256 mag loads. For an 87 grain jacket ed Hornady bullet Hodgdon lists 14.0-15.0 grains of H4198.

The following loads are from the
Complete Loading Manual for the TC Contender.

For the 89 grain Lyman mold 257464 5.0-9.5 grains of Blue Dot. 5.0-9.5 grains HS-7, 7.0-9.5 grains SR-4759.

For 87 grain bullets Hodgdon gives13.0-14.0 H4227, 12.5-13.5 H110, and 15.0 H4198.

IMR gives for 87 yr bullets: 14.0-15.0 imr4198, 12.0-13.0 imr4227.

For Hercules 2400 and an 87 gr bullet 11.0-12.0 gr.

For an 87 gr bullet Winchester gives 13.0-14.0 gr 680, and 12.5-13.5 grains 296.

Use the loads at your own risk. Don't sue me if I transcribed wrong.

I have had a Contender barrel for about 45 years, and a Marlin 62 for about 5 years. I can't say enough good things about the cartridge.

Much appreciated all! I’ve got a mod 62. Brass is all 357 all necked down, trimmed and ready to go! The projectiles and data are the hardest thing to find! The 85&87 gr are all I can find! Would love to locate some Hornaday fp but no luck and load data for those weights also was scarce. Thanks for all info I’ve got H110, acc 1680, and H335 ive seen some data for them with these powders

The little 256 WM is a very accurate cartridge with most magnum pistol powders like 4227, H-110/296 etc. The original factory loading was with a 60g flat base JHP, the rifling twist in the guns is usually setup for the light, short bullets. My best results were with bullets under 80g. Good luck.

Two more rifle loads(model 62) from the Sierra manual. For an 87 gr SPT the accuracy load is 13.5 gr imr4227, and the hunting load is 14.0 gr imr4227.

Thanks again for all the data! So, this old Mod 62 was given to me with several other rifles, some good some nothing more than clubs!! But of them all this one had my interest. So got it with no magazine or ammo about 4/5 years ago, I found several mags, and before I started in the reloading fun I bought some ammo made by a guy In Montana I think it was I never shot it until a few weeks ago and now I want to find a nice round and enjoy shooting this interesting rifle! Thanks again and appreciate any and all data, this is a great community

I haven’t had a chance to dig out my book. My little one is sick and nobody is getting any sleep so it’s rough around here.

FWIW, I had by far the best luck with 2400 and the 60gr JSP bullets. I don’t recall the powder charge though. It’s been at least 2 years since I loaded for it, but it’s about time to make another run.

Thanks again Kentucky and Bob again appreciate the help! I was reading somewhere that folks were taking the plastic tips off the nosler bullets for loading in 256 and them folks say made for a nice little HP and helps with Length in mod 62 mags!!

Any Leeds on 25 cal 60-75 grain Bullets much appreciated also ive looked online at every site that sells and LGS and nothing besides what I’ve got already in the 85 & 87 gr
