Wanting to get a bench, target rifle made up for some time to spend with my brother.
Pretty much set on a Lawton 7500 action, Shilen barrel but the stock is undecided.
Glass is in hand and is nice - I have to work a few extra weeks of weekends to get it paid for, hence no stock shopping yet.
Trying to get ready by April, but cannot decide the chambering.
They shoot out to a grand and have several informal balloon shoots thru the year.
I have no delusions of grandeur; I just want to get to the front half of the competition.
I cannot decide which caliber would be the best way to go.
The 260 looks good, but I have strong reservations against the 308 case, besides - I got the long action because 2.8" is a little restraining for my blood.
The 6.5-05 is looking good, but I don't know about it enough (and the 30-06 case design) to view it favorably
6.5-284 -enough said already, used by every TOM - DICK - HARRY for good reason.
It is the short mag that has me intrigued, seems like the 6.5rem mag without a shoulder.
Does anyone have experience with the short mag wildcat and have some insight on it?
My brother is currently making (buying) a switch barrel setup with a 260 for the smaller round. I might go in that direction myself but the bolt face sorta constrains me here; I go with a mag bolt face or a "std." face is where I'm at.

The 6.5x284 is a favorite of mine and is a consistent winner in competition. You do need an action long enough to allow you to seat the bullets out.
That being said, my latest build is a 6.5x55 Swede using a VZ-24 Mauser 98 action mated to a A&B F-54 heavy barrel. It's not competition grade, but is a fun gun to shoot.
