.260 vs 7mm08 for long range hunting

For me now I would choose the 7mm-08. Short action, plenty or punch for deer, elf, etc. They seem very easy to reload for, and for hunting heavier bullet selections in the 7mm-08 can be had.

Very true and I think I would have no problems choosing it if I could find one in a light tactical configuration.

Can't resist... Where do you buy elf tags?

Thanks for the information. My 6.5x55 mauser likes the 140 vld. But when it comes to powder it's very picky. I'm getting 3/4 moa now and I'm good with that. But that gun is a lot like my 280 k98 it was sporterized by the same guy and holds a lot of sentimental value to me.
What powder did it like?

Differences: .020" diameter and possibly 10 - 20 grs optimality in bullet selection.

7/08 much more likely to be on the shelf if needed.

The option of heavier for caliber bullets in 7mm may be important for elf.

Nor sure why you all think I will be elf hunting but I'm a little curious on why you know a bigger bullet is needed on a little elf...

H4895 believe it or not. I had an old guy that said it would love it. Idk how he knew that and I wouldnt say it ((loves it)) but it has proven to be the hardest gun to load for. My .280s and my .257 are very easy to please. 6.5x55 not so much lol

Elf.....Elk.... elfs are little Elk :)

Slip of the finger and it gets more responses than anything :)

My phone turned rain into train on the rain rifle thread and I got a picture of a gun with a train as the optic. It's what makes it interesting.

Shoot an elf and santa ain’t bringing you anything for Christmas

It depends on the elf. He probably wouldn't miss Gary. Gary doesn't help much, eats a lot, and is the only elf who has to take "smoke breaks" during the day even though no one has ever seen him smoke anything. :D

As for the original question, I'd probably pick the 7mm-08 setup to shoot 160-ish gr bullets, but not by much. My favorite rifle right now is a 7x57 which is the ballistic twin. I just wish the barrel was 24" instead of 20".

My experience is with 6.5CM, but if the 260 you choose will allow you to use the same bullets and use the same twist the 260 will do the exact same thing. Personally If I had a 260 and liked it then I'd keep it. But if thinking about buying a 260 in 2018 I'd go 6.5 CM and call it good. Very good off the shelf ammo is readily available at much cheaper prices and the 6.5 was designed from the ground up to shoot the long high BC bullets. Most 260's have the wrong barrel twist and the mag boxes are too short to allow the longer bullets to be seated out where they belong. Which limits powder capacity, and velocity, if you use them in a 260.

Either the 260 or 6.5 will easily out perform 7-08 at distance, and with 25% less recoil. The 30-06 isn't any better and with nearly double the recoil. A 140-147 gr 6.5 bullet will easily out penetrate 140-168 gr 7mm or 30 caliber bullets and will match 175-180 gr 7mm and 30 caliber bullets on game. It is about sectional density and bullet length, not weight.

You'll struggle to find good 7-08 or 260 ammo in stores. Either is a re-load only option. High quality hunting and match grade 6.5CM ammo is everywhere including Walmart.

As much add I like the 260, I agree with this. But I don't shoot factory ammo so it didn't matter.

My reply regarding the .30/06 was sorta “tongue in cheek”, sorta....
As I mentioned, I have both .260 and 7mm08. Both are Remington Mod-7’s, Hunting Rifles...
Asking which I like better, is like asking me which of my children I love more. My answer is, my grandchildren, of course! Hence, my .30/06 answer!

But, the question is which of the two for shooting game at 600+yds, which of course is “none of the above”. But, if I was going to try, I’d at LEAST, use something better for “hunting”, not paper punching.
Shooting game at 600+ yds is excellent “shooting”, but like “vegetarian” is an ancient name for “starving hunter”.
So, yes, my reply was directly “aimed” at your absurd question. Unfortunately I misjudged my target and completely missed. Aimed to high.
Ok, I’ll shut up...

The 7mm08 has better ballistics at range than the 260 but as said above out to 700 yards both guns are very capable. As for the 30-06 I have never see a situation that a 30-06 was the best option for the job. The ballistics are trash unless you are ususnt that huge chunk of led and I like to eat the Deer I shoot so if that is needed I'll stick to my 280. I think pol are forgetting that this is about a specific purpose. I have many guns all are capable of what I want but I fond myself shooting deer at 500 to 700 yards almost every year. To make things fun I would like to have a gun for these times. I do reload so ammo is not a big issue. So I will say this again...I'm only interested in 260 or 7mm08 not 30-06 or 6.5cm

@huntinfool87 - you had your answer before you asked the question. There aren’t any 7-08 “light tactical hunting rifles” readily available on the market, and you’re unwilling to do any customization modification work, so your question of 260 or 7-08 isn’t a question. Go buy the 260 light tactical hunting rifle and be merry.

Well thanks to this post I have found a light tactical 7mm08 to look into so I guess your last comment was wrong. I am a gunsmith I do custom work all day long I have custom made guns I'm sorry I'm not looking for a gun to fit your needs and desires.

A gunsmith afraid to rebarrel a rifle to 7-08?
I never said I was afraid to do it. I said I dont want to do it. You seem to have a hard time understanding what it is I'm trying to do here. Do you think a plumber wants to come home and re plumb his sink? Do you think a dish washer wants to come home and wash dishes? I have custom made guns. I want a gun that anyone can go buy to hunt deer with out to 700 yards. I want a tactical type rifle and I want it in .260 or 7mm08. I'm sorry this is not a gun you are interested in and it's not how you would do things you are free to move along and go show everyone that you know what they want better than they do on a different post.
