anyone use any .264 cal bullets for varminting? I'm looking for a hollow point bullet, .264 that will have enough power to kill a coyote around 300yrds, but not blow a huge hole out the other side. Any experience, suggestions?

In reality, I'd load the 110 Barnes solids. Sierra recommends their 100 grainer for .264s, but I'd first try the 85 grain, but try not to vaporize it by pushing too hard. It says it was designed for cartridges like the 6.5x55, so it might be too fragile to be pushed nearly 4,000 fps, but Sierra does load it up to 3700.

I like the A-Max bullets for coyotes, but then i don't mind sewing some either. Here's a 6.5 WSM XP-100 140 A-Max @ 435 yds.--

and the unluckiest coyote ever with my 6.5-284 (129 SST) XP--

Yeah--both those coyotes thought a big case capacity in a pistol was ridiculous too. Shoulda' gone with the RSAUM case actually, as i would've been able to clear the ejection port loading the 140 A-Max correctly. When shooting the little guns at long-range--i'll take all the velocity i can get. U think that's crazy? Love to hear your comments on this 1 then--338 Lapua Improved--

Well??

Lopezni,
Little off-topic, but to respond to your post, when Savage made the Strikers and H-S Precision who continues to make specialty pistols chambers their handguns for the WSM cartridges.
I use SAUM, WSM, Dakota, and yes, a 338 Lapua Improved (338 Allen Xpress - Hence 338AX). I do have a couple of 6.5-284's and a 6mm-284. These are chambered in XP-100's (rear and center-grip) and in a MOA Maximum.
I hunt, compete, and just have fun with these specialty handguns.

they're interesting, but I'll stick with my rifles. Love that scope up top though. Too much work to get a handgun up here, wound rather spend the money on another rifle or Encore barrel anyway.

I dropped a coyote at about 225-250 yards 2 weeks ago with my 6.5 Grendel. I am running 129 grain SST's. This is a new caliber for me but it does seem to do a great job and I am quickly falling in love.

Would love to have 1 of thos uppers. I hear they're making a 6.5 123-gr. A-Max too that has a reported BC >.5. May have to try that soon.

6.5's

I have an old 96 mau,1905 CG that shoots well.I've shot a 264 win mag,and know of other 6.5's. One a 6.5 on a 280 case blown out ,40 deg shoulder and tight neck. What is the best twist to shoot all weight bullets, Or is there one?

man it is so nice to see an AR that is completely Rambo'd out and gets shot further than 50yrds. I was at the range trying to test some loads the other day and this guy came with an M&P 15 with 16" barrel, quad rail, bi-pod, collapsible stock, and $500 eotech sight and couldn't hit an empty case of beer at 50yrds. Wasted a lot of ammo. and got me to leave though.

sscoyote and xphunter - where abouts are you guys?

Very very interesting.

sscoyote, what are the barrel lengths on your two 6.5 pistols (the WSM and the -.284)?

Extremely impressive shot on the yote - I'm at a loss for words on the nearly 1K yard one.

Actually so was i. I bet that gun wasn't shooting much better than 1 MOA when i killed that dog, but the ballistics program profile fit that trajectory perfectly. Couple weeks after that shot i was out with the wife coyote hunting and wasn't having any luck so i thought to take a "rock" shot--typical of guys running around with all this dope on their firearm and can't wait to test it, like a kid in a candy store. So i lasered a dirt clod on an embankment in a dry wash at an even 1000. So i got all tight in the stadium seat i use and dialed the dope and shot. Just a hint of a breeze. Of copurse i couldn't see any impact so we took a long walk down there and sure enuf the bullet hit only 4" left of that dirt clod. I about fell over when i dug the bullet out.

Spotting for Ernie (and another buddy Ray Prager out of Denver using Contenders) when they broke their "world records" ...we think, is what i really enjoy. When Ernioe killed that PD at 1590 i was spotting for him with a set of Big Eyes. I saw every vapor trail on his shots and on the 9th shot watched the bullet go into that dog, and watched him expire. I'll never forget it.

Here's another article you might like-- http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/coyotes-specialty-pistol-3.php

Come on out to Rich Mertz Thousand Yard HG shoot in Sundance this year. Should be a bunch of guys this year, and might even give Ernie some competition (we're all hoping, that is--Hardy Har). There will be a roving field course too with tgts. at unknown distances--hooray! Go here and read about it-- www.moaguns.com

Oh sorry--the Shilens were 16.5" + muzzle break. Shoulda' kept it a 6.5-284, but rebarrelled to the 6.5 WSM, but if i could do it again i'd make it a 6.5 RSAUM, since those cases would fit the XP-100 perfectly.

264 Win Mag. with 107 MatchKings 4831sc. Great combo and deadly on everything, rock chucks, coyotes and nutria. Best nutria shot so far this year was 423yds.

here are my two xp-100R,s. one is a .223 rem with a 5x burris and harris bipod and the second one is a .260 rem with a 2.5x8 leupold and harris bipod. the .223 is good to 300yds plus with no wind and the .260 is a solid 500yd plus shooter(does better in the wind) if i do my part. eastbank.

I suspect almost any bullet coming out of a 264 win mag will kill a coyote at 300 yards. Or any other distance for that matter within reason. That antelope being proof :what::what::barf:
