I was resizing a batch of range pickup .30-06 brass and accidently got a .270 case mixed in. The .270 case resized to .308. I know that the .270 case is made from a .30-06 case. I pitched the .270 case but I've been wondering if this case could be safely fired. How much strech and shrinking can a case safely take? Just curious. Thanks for ideas.

Most likely the only problem would be neck cracking a few trips through the sizing die sooner then would be expected with 30-06 brass.

If you were to anneal it, there probably would be no differance at all.

There certainly would be no safety issue.

Virtually identical from rim to top of shoulder, but...

the neck length is longer on a .270 Win.

When you size 30-06 down to 270, the neck will be a little short. No big deal. It only becomes a problem when you try to load 100g bullets with the ogive touching the lands. There may not be enough neck to hold the bullet.

When you size original 270 brass up to 30-06, the extra neck sticks way out. Be sure to trim to correct length.

Otherwise, the boys above gave you good advice.

you would have to trim the 270 cases down to '06 length to use them properly. They're about .046" longer than the '06.
I guess ants took care of that issue.

Good point, interlock. I don't turn or ream the neck either.
Everybody warns us that the neck will be thicker, but it's still within specification when the sizing is complete.
