Hi,

I just got a R700 Mountain Rifle in 270 Win that I want to work up a 150 grain load for. I will be reloading for the Nosler 150gr BT and 150gr Partition.

I've been doing a lot of reading to pick the best powder. IMR, Hodgdon 4350 vs 4831 seems to be really popular, as well as RL-22.

For my specific rifle and bullet weight, based on your guys' experiences which type of powder (4350 vs 4831) is better, and can somebody explain the differences between Hodgdon's powder vs IMR.

Lastly, I also want to reload for my 30-30 Winchester and 8x57mm. Of the two powders above, have any of you had experience using them in these calibers as well? I'd like to consolidate a powder for all 3, but if not, I'd like some recommendations for powders that I can also pick up in one bulk buy. I was thinking IMR 4064 for these 30-32 caliber cartridges. I like shooting 170gr bullets in my 30-30. What do you recommend? And for the 8mm mauser I want to shoot 200gr bullets, I was thinking a Nosler Partition.

Thanks in advance!

I think the consensus is that 4831 is *the* powder for the 270.

For 150 grain bullets in 270, RL26 is worth considering. I worked up some good loads with a Speer 150 BTSP.

imr 3031 will cover the 30-30 and the 8x57. what rifle is the 8x57 in that would decide the load. for the 270 win 4831 is great but for hunting in the cold get the h-4831sc.

I'd have to check data... in my case, both Hodgdon's and Hornady's... I'm recalling that IMR 3031 will cover a 170gr .30-30. Less powder and lower velocity than a 150gr.

In the 8mm, it's been a few years, but I recall 44.5grs drove a 170grRN 2500fps and shot to a K98's sights. I don't recall if IMR3031 was published as applying to a 200gr bullet.

IIRC, IMR's 3031 and 4064 will both work, and 4064 may also work in the .270... but do verify that. It's been a while since I looked at this data.

For a .270, I've more recently seen a 150gr bullet and 50grs IMR4831 work fine.

I've simplified my reloading and 4064 for everything long gun. Oh yeah, I use lever evolution powder for the .35 Rem. Then there's the 4895 that I use for a bunch of stuff since it's around. And the handgun powders.... So many powders......When will the madness stop!!!!!.

Imr4831 is hotter than h4831, I've used both and found I prefer imr4831, make sure to double check your load data, if you load imr4831 to h4831 levels you will have pressure problems

I load a 130 grain bullet, so we're not exactly comparing apples to apples here, but I love IMR 4831 for this caliber.

I saw this Extreme Extruded stuff on the store shelves, good to know. I guess it'd more reliable in cold weather given the shorter ignition time?

IMR 4064 is about perfect for 8x57 and 30-30. It would lose about 100fps in the 270.
It did make a very accurate load using the 140nbt.

H4831sc works well and is temp insensitive. For 150gr bullets I'd give the Alliant powders Reloder 23 and 26 a look, excellent velocities and 23 is very temp insensitive.

I shot H before the Extreme in 270 and I live Co. Been shooting 150gr ABLR. and I've shot 150gr Partition with same powder. I'm not sure when Nosler have new 150gr AB for 270 and that should be good one.

I use IMR 3031 exclusively for my 30-30, and have had very good results. Great accuracy, clean, and minimal recoil. For 270, I use Trail Boss, unless I'm using it for hunting. Then H4831 will get the job done just fine.
