I got a message from midway USA that said Winchester discontinued production of 270 WSM brass? That doesn't sound good for us that have rifles chambered in this caliber. Bummer.
It seems that only the 300 WSM is going to survive in the long term. It shouldn't be too hard to make 270 WSM brass from 300 WSM brass. But even finding that is difficult and expensive. I've always been able to find plenty of factory 300 WSM ammo and have saved the brass. Our local Walmart had Federal priced at $20/ box recently and I bought 6 boxes. That is about 1/2 the cost of just brass when you can find it.
I wonder how difficult it is to neck down a 300 to 270. I have necked up 223 to 243, but not down.
Hopefully 270 WSM will be around a while. They are still making rifles chambered for it and I like mine finally after finding a recipe that works well in it.
I am still waiting for someone to manufacture some 243 WSSM.
Necking down that much should not be a problem IMHO. I would not even worry about neck turning for that small a difference. about like 308 to 7MM-08. I could see the hand writing on the wall when the many 300 WSM offerings started to go away some time ago. Over time I got as much once fired brass as I figured I would need for the rest of my life. About 400 brass or so avoiding nickel, and worked up good loads with 10 brass using them over and over while annealing them every 3 reloads. I got about 12 reloads with good primer pockets before I split two necks so I feel that my brass supply will be sufficient for my needs without the need to anneal if use them till they split. In your shoes I would buy any of the assorted WSM brass I could find and possibly any reasonably priced ammo to get the brass. I will look in my oddball brass pile as I might have a few 270 WSM or 223 WSM brass that I saved "just because". I will PM you if I find any.
