I was getting back to make some 270 WSM loads after a couple years. I have been using 130gr Sierra and RL 19. I was wondering what some of you folks might recommend for 140 gr bullets and powders. Also brass. I have seen some split necks on my prior loads with fairly new brass. I would like to develop a good all around load for large deer, maybe some other western game such as Elk, Antelope.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm a sucker for partitions, but the accubond might be a good option too, hornady makes an Interbond if you can find em, for powders, R19 R22 and h1000 should work well, if Sierra made 140 pro hunters that would be my first pick. I just lean to flat based.

For elk, 150 Partitions and Magpro.

I think the beauty of the 270 WSM is its ability to drive heavy bullets fast and accurate in a short action. Magpro seems to be developed for the short magnums and worked best compared to the other powders we had on hand.

I'd say 140gr Accubond over MagPro, it's an excellent hunting bullet and with MagPro in the WSM you can push it to 3200 fps. I've used the 140gr AB @ 2950 fps out of my .270 Win over the past few years to kill a Muley buck, an Antelope buck and a cow elk. Ranges ran from 60 to 290 yds and performance was quite satisfactory in all cases. The 150gr Interbond looks like a great bullet, but I just wasn't able to get acceptable accuracy out of the two known shooter .270's I tried it in. If your rifle likes it, it would probably be a strong option.

It sounds like that 140 Accubond is a winner. In past experience I had decided to stay away from polymer tips for serious hunting. However getting good feedback on 140 Accubond. Never tried Mag Pro. Ive always been a Hodgdon, Reloder, IMR guy. Might be worth a shot though.

Me too. Even though I don't have any of the slower Reloders on hand. I don't reload many big magnums so don't need those kind of powders. I think someone recommended MagPro for 270 WSM on this board and we tried it. More velocity and better accuracy than IMR4350 and both 4831's. Good luck finding it in a store, though. There are not many Accurate powder distributors. Cabelas is one but they don't always have it on the shelves.

FWIW we also tried it in .280 Rem. It worked nicely with 160 partitions.

heck! I got into my old box of 140 accubonds to see the tip had fallen off one and partially disintegrated in the box leaving pasty white flecks on the other bullets! If it cant hold up in a box in my basement how can it hold up to 3200 fps or a big deer

Never had that happen to mine, but then again, they don't get too old... Do you reckon that the tips will be doing most of the work?

well no... lead and copper doing the work. I wonder if something in the bullet over these years worked on that tip...

those tried and true 130 gr. Sierra sp are looking good to work up starting loads. Hard to go wrong with those...

Yup those would do it alright. Still might look into something heavier for elk but if they're not the norm our western deer and antelope fall nicely to 130s

I've got some 150 gr ballistic tip boat tails loaded with 58 gr of 4350 ,chromed 3250 out of 24" bl remember 700.im at work right now but I'll look up all the components & coal in the morning & post . It took me 27 rounds at an increase of .2 gr per round to work up to it. Drop back to 56 gr to start. I only get 3/4 minute accuracy from it but I keep it tucked back for a bean field day.

looks like 150 gr are ok.

Anybody try Speer 130gr. on big deer? Are they good performers and good in the accuracy department?
Went for Sierra but all they had in stock was Speer, didnt buy any just considering.

Penetrated 10" of elm at 100 yds fully mushroomed but as much intact as you could ask I guess. Some of the core was lost in the wood (as expected). The hot cor jacket did seem a bit (and not by a LOT) thinner than pro hunters. Haven't seen one first hand on a deer but have heard great things.

I haven't tried the 130gr Hot Cors, but did use the Speer 130gr SPBT out of the WSM on one deer. Velocity was 3250-ish fps, accuracy was great, but on a 30 yd broadside, in the pocket shot, the bullet came apart. The deer was dead very quickly, but I found a 3"-4" entrance hole, one lung destroyed (some found in a bush near the hit), and bruising but no hole in the second lung. The Speer BTSP might work great at lower impact velocities, but I personally wouldn't use it in the WSM again.

Helped my brother with his and we used Reloder 17 and Hornady interlock and sst's to pretty good effect. I would also check out the new Hornady ELD'x in the 145 grain for this cal.

update:
I have a load put together waiting for better weather. 140 gr. Accubonds 64.5 gr. IMR 7828 ssc, Win. brass and primer. 0.015" off the lands.

Will post targets when I can.

Anybody hunt with the 130 gr Scirocco?
My father uses the 130 Scirocco. I worked up a load for him with IMR 4350, with amazing results. He hasn't harvested anything yet, but the expansion is supposed to be good for the velocity of the round.

Use the gold standard in the .270, the Hornady 140gr BtSpt Interloks.
Weatherby has used the Hornadys in their factory ammo for 70yrs.
150gr for moose.

The ELD-X are just the A-max with a different poly carbonate compound tip.
Mostly marketing hype, IMO. Not something I'd use for our smallish deer at rock throwing distance we shoot them at.
