I've been a long time user of the 270 WIN,and it's allways been my favorite cartrige.A few days ago my oldest son brought me a Browning A Bolt in 270 WSM, and a couple of boxes of silvertips.I've only fired it a few times, but it handles well and has a good trigger.Anybody out there have any experience or thoughts on the 270WSM or the A Bolt?

no experience w/ an a-bolt.

for your wsm, go get a pound or two of rl-19, some hornady interlocks, and go forth and kill whatever you want.

good luck w/ it - i'm sure you'll like it!

I don't like A-Bolts.

I owned one about 15 years ago and found it to be tinny and cheaply built. They also have a paper thin extractor that is prone to failure and a poor stock shape.

I'd spend my money on something else given the choice. For about the same money you can get into a kimber 84 or 8400 which is a far superior weapon from every imaginable stand point.

As far as short mags go once again I am in the negative column. I don't like them they are not slick feeders and when you get past the flash and trash of the marketing campaign they don't give you enough extra over a standard cartridge to justify the feeding and loss of magazine capacity problems.

Now that USRAC is dead I think we'll see the short mag craze slowly sink into oblivion with a few cult followers to keep it's feeble pulse beating.

Sorry, no experience with A-bolts

However, as a long time fan of the regular .270, were I looking to buy a new gun in this power range, I'd definitely look hard at the .270 WSM. My main criteria would be accuracy...If it lives up to the claims of better accuracy (which it seems to) I'd buy one.

Have experience with both and recommend both. The A-Bolt is a reliable and accurate rifle. Pull weight is adjustable on the trigger.

The 270wsm is an excellent cartridge and you will enjoy it. I have also found Reloder 19 works very well in that cartridge. For more info on the short mags: www.shortmags.org

The A-bolt is a good rifle, but I do not like them. My friend has one and he loves it and has never had a problem with it...I just don't care for it???

I feel the same way about all "new" cartridges. They last as long as gun writers write about them, and most times shorter. Until there is a new product that does not shoot a lead bullet with smokeless powder encased by brass, all new cartridges are are a sales gimmick. I am not saying the 270 WSM is or ever will be a bad round, I just don't think there is a reason to get one when the tried and true rounds are available.

30-06,thats about how I have allways felt,if something works,I stick with it.I like mauser actions and classic calibers, but I haven't tried anything new in a while.Anyway, sons are supposed to bring old dad a rifle every now and then, aren't they?

I can tell you that the .270wsm works great on Missouri whitetails. My prefered bullet is the 150gr SST. The A bolt is a good rifle, justnot my cup of tea.
