This cartidge is an excellent new cartridge. It has some amazing factory ballistics. I can see why it can be considered the perfect NA caliber.


With a 150 gr bullet beats all the .308, 30-06, 270 win, 300 win mag, 300wsm calibers in ft/lb retention and drop.


the 150gr Balistic Silvertip at 500 yard keeps 1600+ lb/ft. It is way ahead of the regular 270 and 30 calibers. It is around 50-100 ahead of the .30 magnum loads.


What do you guys think? The only thing i am scared about is that the support from consumers and winchester.

I am a big fan of the 6.5mm and .277" calibers. I have a 270 that I'm pretty happy with (give or take the crappy stock) but if I didn't have such a gun, I would own a Savage 111GNS in 270 WSM.

Looking just at Remington cheapies, the 270 WSM (130 Gr @ 3275fps) has 1,382 ft/lbs at 400 yards and is down 14" from a 200 yard zero. Compare this to 1,180 ft/lbs for the standard 130 Gr 270 Win down 20" from a 200 yard zero and the 150 Gr 300 Win Mag with 1,425 ft/lbs of energy at 400 yards and 19" at 400 yards from a 200 yard zero.

Of course, also compare this to a 140 Gr 7mm Rem Mag with 1,564 ft/lbs of energy at 400 yards and is down 14" at 400 yards with a bit heavier bullet and slightly larger frontal area to boot! Or even the new 7mm Remington Short Magnum with 1,743 ft/lbs at 400 yards and only down 15.4" at 400 yards with a 200 yards zero when using the 160 Gr Nosler Partition.

Lots of good choices out there including the new short magnums. I just feel that the 6.5mm, .277" and 7mm are the best choices when you weight killing ability vs. mid range trajectory (200 to 500 yards) and recoil.

I plan on buying a couple of the short magnums when Savage begins to offer their AccuTrigger in the hunter weight rifles. 300 WSM will be tops on my list primarily because I believe if any of the new short magnums will be around for 20 years, the 300 WSM (along with the 270 WSM and teh 7mm RSAUM) is the most likely to be the one and because I don't have a carry weight 30 cal rifle stronger than my 336 in .30-30.

Seems I'm a bit behind the times but I figure why get one of them new show off high-falutin' .30-06 thingies when a good ol' thutty thutty gets the job done just fine.

I can see lots of positives about these new short magnum cartridges, and few if any negatives. This is particularly true for a hunter, as compared to some forms of target shooting--maybe. Howsomever, I don't see enough benefit to make a move from my standard .243 or '06 to justify the change.

If I lacked a rifle in .223, 6mm, .270 or .30, I'd probably get an SM and a set of loading dies. I could then load down for plinking and casual hunting, and load to the normal max for serious hunting. And the ability to load down means a longer barrel life...
