According to one of the trapshooters at my club, .22 shotshells work well on them ...Carpenter bees on the other hand...
I've been using one of those traps successfully. I never had to catch the first bee -- one always seemed to go in there on his own. If you do have to catch one, I recommend a badminton racket. You can whack them right out of the air. It doesn't kill them, but it stuns them and they fall on the ground. Then you can pop the jar over them and attach it to the trap.I saw a carpenter bee trap being sold- the deal was, you had to catch a live bee to put into the trap to attract more bees. Seemed unlikely I was going to be able to catch one in the first place so I passed.
