2nd deer of the season

I've been driving around looking for somewhere to go deer hunting in Chesapeake, Virginia since I've been stationed here. I have some time off between my assignments that I strategically planned for November. So far, not much luck with finding any private land to hunt near me. WMA's have been scary in my experiences with them.
I guess I'll just save up for some "full-size deer" when I go to New York state for Thanksgiving at my Ma-In-Law's.

so the system of only being allowed to shoot one deer, is this on public land? on private land it's different surely?
No, the regulations apply to all land in the relevant management area. In states like NY and PA, few landowners own enough land that the deer never leave the property. That means that if you harvest too many deer this year your neighbors will have fewer deer next year.

I've got a question? What state do you go to to get a '2nd deer of the season?' I grew up in colorado and now live in arizona. Anything more than one big game animal per year is called poaching is those states

come to iowa. i never even thought of those kinds of restrictions because round here 3-5 deer is a fairly slow saturday. we generaly only hunt on the weekend during gun seasons and last year we ended up with just under 50. yeah, we hunt as a group but we area very small group (4-8 people usually). our neighbors hunt in a larger group and they ended up with well over 100.

dont get too excited, deer down here are WAY overpopulated and whenever i get to talking to folks in the area about how the season is doing, they always tell us to shoot more! i just say "no problem, give me money for the tags!".....they never do though...:(

as far as me personally...last year i took 2 with a bow, 2 with a shotgun, and 3 with my 30-30. cant wait to start again in december! (i missed bow season due to insufficient funds:banghead:)

some are as many as a deer a week.

In Virginia this season, you could in theory take 2 deer every day (except Sunday - don't get me started) from September 4, 2010 until March 26, 2011 and all you would need are a regular hunting license, a big game license, an archery tag, a muzzleloader tag, and bonus deer permits (once you got your 6 deer on the basic license).

is it a draw or over the counter? How much for out of state tags?

Much private land in virginia is leased up by hunting clubs. Look around, down your way there are plenty of clubs always looking for members, and its cheap. Up here in NoVA its pretty pricey to join a club (figure $1000 or more vs $200-300 in S. Virginia)

PM me for more info. I can probably help you out.

pardon me, forgot to congradulate you on a successful hunt!

just curious, why do you choose to hunt with a crossbow instead of a compound? ive never fired a crossbow but on the few occasions ive held them, they struck me as heavy and seemed like they would be difficult to manuver in the woods.

avs
where i live between archery, blackpowder (early and late) rifle and shotgun
we can get 5 tags per hunter if you draw both doe permitts allowed
so that means a total of 20 tags in my family i love hunting :)
and this is just for whitetail and we are allowed a bear too
