I was able to get to the range for the 2nd time w/my Pietta Navy Sheriff revolver.

I used the CCI #10 caps -- they fit tighter, although I had a few misfires. The misfired chambers all fired the second time I cycled through and the hammer struck the cap. I am not sure if this a problem with the caps, the hammer or the fact that it was extremely humid this morning. Last time out I used #11 Remington caps and had no misfires, but the caps were loose.

I used 24 grains fof 3FG Goex, wonder wad and .454 Hornady ball.

All shots were from 25 yards, standing. I forgot my scope, so on some shots could not see where they were hitting. But my groups are getting better. I did change my aiming point a couple of times, which accounts for the spread. All my shots were a little high (which I understand is common for Colts). I do need more practice shooting a handgun... still kind of new to me.

I really like the way this gun feels in my hand and the 24 grain load makes plenty of smoke! Once again, after loading up the cylinder, I gave the arbor a little shot of Ballistol. No problems at all with binding. The cylinder turned smooth as silk.

Good shooting. I'm getting to many guns. Wife says something has to go.
Will sell my 1851 steel frame 44 sheriffs with 45 colt converson cylinder.

I only have six guns -- two BP rifles and four cap and ball revolvers. When I got this Navy Sheriff earlier this month from Cabela's (it was on sale for $129), my wife was a little upset. But then I pointed out it was on sale and it was cheaper than all the hair spray products she had just bought!!! That quieted her down. Still trying to get the misses to the range. Something tells me she would be a deadly shot!!

I bought the same gun at the same price. I noticed yesterday on the Cabela's site, it's now back up to $199, sale's over. :D I couldn't resist at the price, Pietta and all.

Mine shoots really good groups really high. I used a dremel to deepen the rear sight notch in the hammer so that I can modify my sight picture and bring the groups down, which will be my range project for this weekend.. I was shooting 3" at 15 yards off hand, two handed, but WAY high. Holding low isn't my favorite way to correct such things. It's a danged accurate revolver, though, pleasantly surprised by that. :D

Oh, I was shooting 20 grains of 777 topped by corn meal filler and a .457 round ball. I just bought some .454 round balls, should fit okay and be a bit easier to load. I just had the .457s left over for my ROA which I mostly shoot cast conicals in anymore.

I benched my gun today. I was able to adjust my sight picture to hit about 2" high at 25. Hell, that's close enough, just use a 6 o'clock hold and I'm good to go. Off the bench, 20 grains equivalent 777 topped with corn meal, I shot 4.5" group for 6 shots. That's not TOO bad, I guess, but aiin't much better than your target there shooting off hand. That's some sweet shootin' you did. :D The gun is not close to my ROA for accuracy, but I really didn't expect it to be. That thing shoots 2" at 25 yards benched.

I just got through casting some .454 conicals. The .457s wouldn't load in it, too big. My new Traditions loading press, though, makes short work of round balls. Much quicker load time at the range. Dump 6 powder charges, dump 6 filler charges, place 6 balls and press 'em bang, bang, bang ... done. The slowest part is putting the caps on. :D How have I lived without a press? :D I'd like to get a better one in the future, one that I can switch rammers on and load .31 cal, too, would be way nice.

Next trip, I'm going to load .454 conicals and test for accuracy with 15 grains equivalent 777. I only cast 20 up just now, about to lube 'em.

You guys are seriously going to talk me into getting a cap and ball revolver. I've been thinking about it. I like em all, especially the Army Colt clones.

Join the party. :D I've sort of revived interest lately. Shot BP since college days, 1974 got my first, a brass Navy. My next, hopefully Cabela's will still have it on sale when I get the money next week, is going to be a Pietta 5.5" barrel steel frame '58 Remington they have on sale right now, not to tempt you or anything.... http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...arentId=cat370001&id=0028401&_requestid=84115 An', I was kinda thinkin' of getting a spare cylinder for it, too. :D

Wife says something has to go.

If my wife had ever said that...quess which would be on their way out?
I would help her back her things though...to be a gentleman!

If I remember correctly...the original Colts were all sighted for 75 yards...which is why the replicas shoot high at shorter distances.

There's nothing like being at a range and setting off a BP gun.
Every eyeball on the range instantly looks your way.
Every shooter is going " what was that?"
And they are all amazed that it's accurate.

And you know every shooter wants a shot with it.

Black Powder. It can be a major ego boost and it's flat out fun
