Title says it all. I am looking for a 629 with the shortest barrel possible to use as a fun/crowd pleaser gun. My only requirement is that the ejector rod still be full length. I know with the .38/.357 a 3" barrel is enough, does the same hold for the N-frame .44 magnum?

I had Mag-Na-Port build a 2 1/2 inch for me years ago with the full length ejector rod so it can be done. You lose the front locking point so they machined a ball detent lock into the top of the crane that worked fine. Bring money!

They sell a 2-1/2" and 3" N frame 44 Mag already, so it won't be that expensive. If you can live with a lock, that is. The Nightguard and the Bounty Hunter Models. If you get the Nightguard and shoot it with full house loads, please videotape it. I don't want to do it, but I wouldn't mind seeing it.

I am not looking for a custom gun. I just want to make sure that when I purchase a 3" model I will be getting a full length ejector. They make the 629ES with a 3" barrel right now and there are some exclusives still floating around that had a 3" barrel.

Thanks

I have no idea what a "crowd-pleaser" gun is, and I like my 4" Mountain Gun, myself. But the ejector on the 3" looks full-size to me.

I have a factory "performance center" ported 3" 629 "carry comp". I have been very pleased with it.

Shot Mag-Safe .44mag with it once. It was a snappy round and shot funny-looking wicked blue flame ahead of the gun even in bright sunlight.

Definitely fun. See Armed Bear's first picture.

There are definately 3" factory 629's out there floating around out there that pre-date the lock if thats' important to you. I think a good number of them were done in special runs for Lew Hortan.

The Lew Horton ones are nice.

I bought my 3" with the lock but it was easy to completely remove. With the non-shrouded hammer, I didn't worry about the new hole in the side. Just a thought.

Here's a couple of pics of my 629-4 3".

It does not have the full length ejector rod. Don't hardly notice.
If you insist on the full length rod & if I recall correctly, there are some full lug 3 inchers around, these may have the full length rod.

Good luck,

Bruce
