My wife has a new Taurus PT-111, she likes it but she seems to shoot low (really low) a lot. 7yds she'll shoot maybe a foot lower than she thinks she is aiming.

One of the guys in our club (TDI and NRA instructor) suggested blacking out the white dots on her pistol. I think I can do that (and re-do them white if need be).

I know that when I shoot the gun it doesn't shoot low, so I'm pretty sure the sights are spot on.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Somebody needs to make a pistol with a larger sight radius but a small grip, that would probably help her out as well.

I've reminded her ;-). I think it's partly that the pistol is DAO and she's still working her trigger finger out.

She did improve over her first qualifier ;-)

Sounds as if she is "milking the grip". In other words, as her trigger finger tightens, so do the rest of her fingers, pulling the muzzle down. Solution is a tighter hold. It's hard to squeeze those fingers tighter if you are holding as tight as you can.
Best regards,
X

Now that sounds like it could be the deal. The grip on that pistol is pretty small (well, her hands are as well, but it's still small). And being a light pistol it's got a pretty decent recoil.

That would also probably help explain inconsistant shot placement, if she's compensating for the 'milking' by aiming high..

Thanks for the tip, more are welcome... We'll be out at the range practicing for sure.

I would say she is anticipating the recoil and dipping the pistol just before it fires. Have her dryfire and watch to see if the tip of the barrel dips. You can also put a coin on the top of the slide near the front sight. If she can keep the coin on the slide thru the trigger pull, she's doing good. Also, you can place live rounds and inert rounds in her magazine and see if the pistol dips on the inert rounds.

Good Luck,

Don

With the longer trigger pull of DAO's, many people roll it in their hands when pulling the trigger. Combined with a weaker handgrip and incorrect finger placement on the trigger and the shots go low, sometimes pushed to the left of pulled to the right.

I've observed her dry firing (lots) and nothing seems odd there. I'll probably hit her with some ball and dummy drills next time we shoot.. If she's flinching, that'll show it for sure.

The DA trigger pull shouldn't be too much trouble, she's used to DA revolvers...
