I have gotten into the habit of buying "bargain" guns lately and have come to the conclusion that you can indeed build a very capable 3 gun defensive battery for about a thousand dollars. In fact it is easier than a lot of people might think. For the purposes of this thread I will define 3 gun battery as being a rifle chambered for a centerfire cartridge, a pistol chambered for a centerfire cartridge and, a shotgun chambered in 410 or larger. I know some people will disagree with my choices of three guns, and that is okay. If you think you can get by with a 22 rifle instead of a centerfire gun, great.:) If you want to substite a 22 cal handgun for a centerfire one that is fine too. Also if you can live without the shotgun you could substitute something else for that but, when all is said and done, you must have at least 3 guns in your arsenal.

What I am aiming at here is coming up with 3, or more guns, for under(okay around) $1000.00 that you believe would be capable of handling most situations you would encounter in a defensive/survival situation. You should be able to do everything from gathering food to hold off a small band of armed men with the guns that you choose.

Please be realistic with your prices. Just because you bought your prized SKS for a $100, ten years ago, does not mean you can buy one tomorrow for the same price, you can't. Used guns are fine but you need to use an "average cost". If you bought a S&W 686 at a yard sale for $150, good for you, but it doesn't count.

So, I will start off, and since I said it was easy, I will build two batteries. Some of the guns may be the same.

Battery 1)

Handgun: Used Glock 22-second gen, 40 S&W w/2 mags $350 source:summittgunbroker.com (includes shipping):)

Rifle: New Saiga 7.62x39 $375 Source: Gunbroker.com (found them as cheap as $349)

that leaves $275 for the

Shotgun: I am pretty sure that you can still buy a brand new 870 express from walmart for under $300 but you can definitely buy a decent used one for under $275. Check gunbroker. I really shouldn't have looked there. There is a great deal on slug gun that is about to end.

Battery #2

Handgun: used S&W 4046 with 3 mags $300 (I'll tell you where those are later after I decide if I am going to buy one):D 3rd gen S&Ws are heavy but great.

Rifle: Used mini-14/30 $450 These are going for around this price locally as well on some of the classifieds I have seen. I just picked up a like new mini 30 for $450. I got my mini 14 for less.

Shotgun: Obviously I could choose a used 870 again, maybe a new express.
But I could also buy a brand new Mossberg 500 for just over $250 and a there are several used 590s around $275. I would be comfortable with any of the 3.

Bonus Battery #3 All new guns.

Handgun: Ruger P95 9mm $299.95 Hofguns.com

Rifle: Eaa Zastava PAP 7.62x39 $350 online $325 local dealer

that leaves $350 for the

Shotgun: This time I will choose a new 870 express for $350 online I am pretty sure these are going for $289 at Wal-mart.

Yes, I would be happy with all three of these batteries although I really prefer something larger than 9mm for my handgun. I would probaly opt for the used 4046 rather than the p95, but that is just personal preference.

Let the games begin and, keep it friendly.:D

Okay, I'll play and I'll go a completely different direction.

Used Marlin 30-30 lever gun - $250. I see 'em in my neck of the woods for that all of the time.

Used Smith & Wesson Model 10 - $325. This should be easy to do, I just bought one myself for the same price.

New Stoeger 12 ga coach gun - $325.

I'm in it for $900, so, I get to spend a little on ammo.

Let's try this buying new guns:

1. Ruger P95 9mm ~$300
2. Smith & Wesson M&P-15 $600 (currently on sale at CDNN)
3. Savage 350 Security in 12 ga $208 (Jet Guns)

OK, I'm $108 over but I did it with all new, desirable and reliable guns. :neener:

I'll play...

New Rossi 2-3 barrel combos run $112 for a .22/.410 or $180 for a .22/.223/16 gauge. Not the best for zombie hordes but it'll work for survival work.

J&G has police/security trade in smith revo's for $225 and up. I believe they have trade in Glocks for $250-$275 range as well.

Other than mil-surplus bolt guns I've personally not run across any great deals around here on centerfire rifles. Thou for $500 you could pick up two nagants and enough ammo to last for years in a survival situation.

I'm not sure I could do it for $1000, but I might get a little bit lucky.

Used 870 or Mossberg 500.
Used SKS or AK.
Used Glock 17, 19, 21, 22, or 23.

I got my SKS for $100, but I put another $200 worth of accessories on it. I could get the guns for close to this, but holsters, slings, cases, ammo, and other accessories might add up. The pawn shops are your friend.

1. NEF Pardner Pump 5+1 for $189 at Academy
2. AK47 from classicarms for $350
3. Any used Glock $350-$450

Hello friends and neighbors // You just described my last three purchases.

1) Most recent 1976 S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman .357/.38 with box, org. cleaning kit in plastic bag, owners manual , holster and knife advertisements and some ammo( $350 OTD)

2) 1993 Remington 870 Express Magnum 20ga. 21" barrel 13" stock Exc. 98% ( $185 OTD)

3) Since this is my most recent rifle purchase I guess I'll go with .22 cal.
A Marlin Papoose breakdown rifle with floating case, all paper work, box, and barrel removal tool. Exc 98% ($185 OTD)
-------------Total $720.00
Since I have room to squeese it in and stay under $1000 my Remington 760 Gamemaster .30-06 with Scope for $225.00 OTD

So Total $945.00 ///This leaves at least enough for a box of HD ammo for each.

All new firearms:
Ruger P95 9mm - $321.00
Remington 870 Express ga. - $299.00
Mossberg 30-30 Lever Action - $367.00
Total = $987.00

New Mossberg Maverick 88 from Walmart = $210
New Smith and wesson 642 = $420
Used Marlin in 30 30 = $250

This is at $880.

Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag.--$250
"Revelations" by Savage 20 ga pump--$150
Yugo Model 24/47 in 8mm Mauser--$125

All purchased used from local gunstores within the last six months.

ed

used Marlin lever action. $300 (Cabelas)
used Mossberg 500. $225 (Cabelas)
used Smith .38 $225 (J&G)
used or new .22lr rifle of your choice $150

Thats 900 dollars and I even got you a .22lr rifle.

Swap the lever action for a milsurp like a Mosin or Yugo Mauser and you could get even cheaper.

Wow

You are all playing nice and everything.:D Some really good ideas here.

All bought within the last few years.
hi standard 12g pump $125
s&w model 10 $300
century Ak 74 $325

For your senerio I would prolly spend the remaining $250 on sapi plates.

You still don't have a rear sight for your S&W AR :D

How about this: SKS or .30-30 (depending on likes/needs and hunting vs. deffensive balance and PC factor) Marlin used exc. cond. ($250 in my store right now) Ruger Security Six stainless .357 4" ex. cond ($350 in the pistol case right now) The two could share powders if you pick carefully on bullet weights you reload. A couple Lee hand loaders ($25 each) used exc cond 870 $200 Marlin mod 60 .22 ($69) and you could have a complete line-up (4 guns) a brick of .22's and a box of ammo for everything else and we'd probably eat the sales tax...plus you'd have loaders for the primary HG/rifle and add $100 you could have powder primers and a couple boxes of bullets for each as well. (or delete the cheap .22) or better yet...delete the shotgun and have a LOT of reloading supplies and ammo for a grand! The SKS/.30-30 and .357 both can both hunt or deffend and are cheap to feed...I'd rather have the Marlin than the SKS myself. I probably wouldn't be sharing powders either...but you can pick a shared if need be...might force you to shoot a different weight than you like in one or the other of course.

Here's three I have purchased in the last year give or take a couple of months.
Marlin 336 30-30 in 93% condition $275.00
Ruger Police Service Six revolver in .357 which I rate at 95% for $280.00.
A Winchester 1300 smooth bore "Slug Hunter" 12 gauge complete with rifle sights, sling swivels, and an attached Weaver scope base for 150.00.
I rate the shotgun at 88% condition.
Patience is your best friend not to mention a rotten economy that has people unloading excess firearms out of necessity or just for extra money.
Oh yea,I have spent very near $250.00 on ammo for these three guns in the last few months.

Lots of love for the Ruger P95. That happens to be what i have on my desk right next to me right now. What a fantastic gun for the money!... I got mine New for $250!!!!! Simply can't beat this gun for a "bang for the buck new gun"... although I do have a Police trade in Glock 23 .40 i paid 250 for at a gun show. That was a smoking deal...

I would choose

Police trade in Glock or Ruger P95 new
Mossberg 500 or Remington 870
Bargin Bin AR in the 500-600 range

it could be doable, i actually have all the guns i listed and in the used market where i got them, For $1000 i could ahve done all 3.

JOe

Rifle: Romanian AK for $350
Shotgun: Used Rem 870 for $250
Pistol: Surplus Tokarev for $185

For a grand total of $785, leaving $215 for magazines and ammo.

OR

Rifle: Mosin M38 for $175
Shotgun: used H&R 12gauge Single shot for $85
Pistol: Surplus Tokarev for $185

For a grand total of $445 leaving $565 for ammo!

I would feel confident with either selection.

1) used S&W 64 $250
2) used pump 12 ga (various makers under $200)
3) surplus Mauser 98k (7x57 preferred, 8x57 more easily found)$175
4) I, too, would add a .22LR semi-auto Marlin 60 $150

Spend the rest on ammo.
