3-inch magnum 00 buckshot?

I told one of my apartment mates, who was out running errands, to get me the baddest buckshot he could find that the Mossberg 500 would chamber for a pumpkin shoot we're doing this weekend (yes, we're collecting pumpkins and blasting them with various firearms at a range for juvenile pleasure). He came back with Remington 3-inch Magnum 00 buck. How does this stuff shoot? I'm looking forward to this a lot...my shoulder, erm, not so much....

I shoot 3" Remington 00 in my 11-87 for deer hunting. Never shot any pumpkins with it tho. Only 15pellets per shell, so full choke and kinda close distance, should do some good damage to a pumpkin.

There is alil more recoil with the 00 magnum rounds, but no worse than shooting a few hundred light loads in an afternoon of dove hunting or clay shooting. LOL

Also, what is the purpose of such a load, other than as entertainment testosterone-laden young males at our own expense? For a home defense load, regular 00 buck in 2.75-inch works just fine, and various slugs are more effective on deer and such if you can't use a rifle. Thus I don't really see any serious use for the stuff....velociraptors? zombies? sasquatch home invasion?

I really don't think you will see any more damage with 3" 00 Buckshot over a 2 3/4" 00 Buckshot on a Pumpkin. It will hurt a little but IMO with no benefit.

It will provide clean, quick kills on pumpkins up to 75 lbs at reasonable ranges even when they charge. Beyond that, use a 300 Mag or larger.

Seriously, outside of some dog driven Southron deer hunts, 3" mag 00 shows little if any advantage over a good 2 3/4" load.

And, in a light shotgun like the excellent 500 Mossberg, it will tear you a new one unless you use good form and technique.

Be young, have fun! You will get older and more "sophisticated" as I have. Things like tiny groups and scores will take on new meanings. That being said; my fondest memories of youth are the countless times my buddies and I spent "Blowing **** up"! I still LIKE to "blow **** up" on occasion; as in hedge apple smacked buy a 4000 fps 55 gr 243. The days of going to the local junk pile and shooting a TV with an SKS are long gone around here.

A really good after-market recoil pad is in order for this application. I added one to my Maverick 88...a <$10 Butler Creek slip-on over the Maverick stock pad. Helps a bunch, since the best patterning Buck load in MY Maverick is the 3" #4Buck Remington load.

Remington Express 2 3/4" magnum "00" is 12 pellets a little lighter in recoil...that's what I keep in my riotgun. (I'm sorry now everything is "tactical"-LOL) That's why I just got that new limbsaver pad...makes it feel about like 9 ball "00" It patterns much better for me than all 9 ball rounds tested (all shotguns are different). That is why I use it...the extra zombie knockdown power is a strong plus on Holloween though

I once shot the front sight clear off a winchester 1300 deer bbl. with winchester's 15 ball 3" mag max loaded "00" (took 2 rounds as I recall) I gave the rest to someone I didn't like...though through the 28" bbl. it was marginally tollerable.

Tonight I will be testing various calibers and guns against pumpkins full of Jello. My GF was bored yesterday and filled them up for me!

Fired the buckshot today. Wow....makes 2.75-in 12ga slugs look soft. I have to admit it was kinda fun, and I was wearing a nice thick leather jacket so it didn't completely destroy my shoulder. Still, after those plus slugs and a healthy dose of Mosin M44 my shoulder is a bit on the tender side. It was wild stuff though. Not sure if I'd actually use it in the field or for HD, 2.75-in 00 probably works just fine for that.
