i was looking at #4 buckshot in 3 inch at midway and a reviewer said he killed a coyote at 70 something yards with that buckshot and an extra full choke.

would 00 buck in 3 inch be a good idea?

this has me curious if i could get my mossberg 12 ga to put holes in a poster board at 100 yards.

Extra full and 00 is a safe combination, but it may not give the best patterns. Trulock says their extra full tubes perform beautifully and give the best patterns with buckshot. Carlson's sells a coyote choke that is designed for 70 yard killing patterns on coyotes using large shot up to buckshot.

You can use an XFULL tube with buckshot if you want, but I wouldn't. Might not hurt a thing, but it isn't a chance I see the need to take, or even see any reason to take. And what about shooting slugs through that choke tube? Is that a consideration for you?

With buckshot, beyond a certain point, more choke might well work to OPEN patterns, not tighten them. It takes patterning to find out what does what with a given shotgun barrel, and every barrel will pattern differently. Only way to know what a given load will do in a given barrel is to pattern it. That means one shot at a time on one patterning board, in my book.

It is possible to get buckshot on targets at 100 yards to a degree, several years ago I was getting 20-30% patterns of the then available (pre-FliteControl) Federal Premium 3" 000 buck loads on GI E-type silhouettes at 100 yards using a Patternmaster choke tube. This tube was a wad-retarding choke that was essentially CYL bore... but it wasn't recommended for use with slugs, so it was a dead end as a general utility approach to extending shotgun range for me.

They should add a disclaimer *with plated buckshot and buffer*. Even with the Carlsons and Trulock, the cheap buck doesnt touch what can be done with a custom choke and highquality buck.

don't want to shoot slugs through and extra full choke. but what about rifled chokes and slugs?

Rifled tubes usually are an improvement in accuracy over smoothbore barrels especially with sabots, but they don't equal the accuracy of fully rifled bores as the slug is moving at full velocity when it hits the rifling of the choke tube, but as usual there are always exceptions.

Since shotguns have become popular for certain styles of varmint hunting recently, there have been a number of purpose built chokes for the task. I would not doubt a 70 yard shot with some of the newer chokes, 100 yards on the other hand sounds a little iffy though. The only way to know is for you to try it out for yourself by patterning various loads through your gun.

Here is a link to a fella trying various hand loaded buckshot through super full choked 12GA shotguns at 80yd. Watch and draw your own conclusions, he has another video somewhere reloading and patterning at 50yd but I could not find it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeW6oAsMudA
