Okay, there is a 4" 617 in the picture... but it was shot to show the difference between the 617's Retro Target and the 696's Square Conversion grips, both non-fg style of cocobolo by Kim Ahrends.
I was talking to a fellow re the 696 in a store yesterday. I pointed to a new 4" 629 and eschued it's virtues over those of the 696, not the least of which was that the new 4" 629 was $750 - less than the last used 696 I saw. Oddly, I had bought my 696 new there six plus years earlier - for $439 - got an additional $10 off for buying a closeout priced new 296 then, too, at $349. I still haven't ever spent that much in one day at a gun store.
Don't re-mortgage the farm for a 696 - that 4" 629 is a lot more revolver for just six more ounces. The 296 or 396, even the new 396NG, at least is lite enough to CC. Still, since I sold my 3" 65 some years back, the 696 is my only current 3"-er.
The 696 looks like a great revolver but the prices can be . And, frankly, who doesn't love an L frame, especially in a big bore? Then add that the price of .44 spl ammo is often more than .44 mag due to the .44 spl scarcity. Like the .41, if ya ain't reloadin' then best to steer clear. Now back the originally scheduled post of 3" revolvers...
I called a friend a few years back when I saw a 696 no dash, LNIB, in the pusher's case for $350. It came with a box of ammo - missing five rounds! He got it for $350 OTD... such a deal!

PS Don't tell me what a nice friend I am for finding him that deal... I have regretted it! Still, diligence will win you a great 3"-er... I'm awaiting my 629 3"-er...
