Actually, if you shot a perp with that 3" mag stuff, and I shot one at the same with a dinky little 2 3/4" load, yours would hit the ground first only if mine was taller. All buck is effective beyond belief, assuming it's used within its range limits.
If you decide to continue, check fit and form, maybe add some weight to the weapon.
I do not advocate shooting anything more than standard 2 3/4" 00 Buck shot for "serious" purposes.
Thats said the day I bought my 1300 I picked up 20 boxes each of 2 3/4" and 3" 00 buck and slugs.
The first shot with 3" 00 was an eyeopener. I found that if you have something bad in your form the 3", if you actually try for another shot, is instant form correction.
I keep buying the 3" for practice. I found that when I can take the 3" in practice well when I switch to 2 3/4" they feel like light bird loads.
I load my HD SG with 2 3/4" Magnum buck 12 pellets simply because it doesn't bother me and I feel my follow ups are so close as to not matter (the Winchester variety also pattern well in my gun) . That said I wouldn't feel under gunned with the 9 pellets. Perhaps the fact that I am 5' 11" and 225 lbs helps.
Another vote for 2 3/4"
Of course I've never owned anything but 2 3/4 " chambers, and never felt undergunned.
EXCEPT for a single shot .410 that is.
I shot my Dr.'s 835 with 3.5" 00 buck. He had a 5 pk. I shot first, he shot 2nd, and we finally conned 3 more idiots to experience what a "Frigging Train Wreck" feel like. Whew...I told him I'd hurt him if he EVER bought those again.
And I'm not recoil sensitive , per se', I've shot a box of 25 12 ga # 1 buck,Most of a 25 box of slugs then went to shoot targets.
2 3/4 plus a CompStock. No bruises at all. Only a comfortable experience.
Last time out, the shooter next to me witnessed me go through about 300 shells which included about 100slugs. Afterwards when he saw the stock, he said that when he got home that he was ordering one A.S.A.P.
I'd assume that that is because muzzle velocity is higher in a 9 or 12 pellet 2-3/4" load for the most part. 3 extra pellets of OO in a magnum load adds about 180grs of weight to the payload, slowing it down.
Remember that "magnum" in shotgun load terminology usually means "heavier payload" not "faster than normal".
Me, I take the extra 3-6 pellets if they're teflon wrapped and pattern well. More mass on target.
