My brother just got a new to him Winchester model 70 in 30-06. I am going to work up a couple loads for him. He wants to use a 180 grain bullet and a 200 grain bullet for his ammo. I already have a couple loads that I set up for my NEF Handi Rifle using MAG primers--with 150 grain bullets, 55 grains of H380 and 60 grains 4831 for 2700-2800 FPS range loads. Anyone have a really good propellant/load combo that works in that Winchester rifle for them with either heavy weight bullet. He really wants an accurate 180 grain load for putting some away. I have on hand several pounds each of AA 2015, IMR 3031, Varget, H4350 and IMR 4320 besides what I use for my rifle. I am willing to get something else if it will work better than what I already stock. Now I will dig into the data for a while and check back in a day or so to see what you all like..:)

I would wager he either got a Winchester M70 or a Remington M700. It seems doubtful that he got a Winchester M700. The good thing is, they are both fine rifles, so he's a winner either way. :)
Also, it doesn't matter if someone has a load that shoots 1/2 moa groups in an identical rifle. That's no guarantee it will shoot well in yours. Every barrel is different, even on identical models.

I know it is a Winchester and you are correct probably a M70.:) I will edit it. Should have put my knowledge filter on and said "now wait a minute!!".:banghead:

I know about the load deal as have been reloading for a number of years just wondering mostly if a specific propellant seems to work with that bullet/rifle combo better than all the others do. BTW he wants to use CoreLokt bullets if he can also.

I've had GREAT luck with H4350 and IMR4350 in my 3006 rifles. I like the H4350 a bit better. I get a little better velocity with it and accuracy seems about the same. The H4350 is one of the least temperature sensitve powders as well.

57 gr is giving me 2800 fps with 180 Hornady's in my 22" Winchester. Getting about 3025 with 150's over 61 gr. Those are just under book max loads, so work up.

This is a 200 yard group with 150's. Just over 1".

This is at 100 yards with Hornady 165's @2850 fps with 58 gr IMR 4350 and a differnt rifle. .312", this was the 1st 3 shots from a new rifle at 100 yards while getting zeroed.

+1 for IMR 4350. It seems to be the only powder my rifle likes. I've tried 4064, 4895,& Varget and I've gotten the best groups so far with IMR 4350 and some 180gr Speer HotCor's.

I just bought some H4350 by accident so I'm gonna have to re work up this load. I'm not near my data but the charge that have me the best groups was near the lower end of the range listed in my Speer manual.

Like most of the others, I like IMR4350 for bullets of that weight in .30-06. I think the H4350 is very similar, but haven't tried it. H414 isn't bad either.
If he decides to try lighter weight bullets, I like Varget for 150 grainers.

I have 10 pounds of 846T that I think might work around here too. Looks like the H4350 is a good one to start with. Thanks guys.:) I will load 10 of each from starting load up with the Core-Lokt 180's first off over the weekend and then fine tune them.

For 200gr Nosler lists RL19 as the most accurate powder and RL22 as the fastest. I am going to be working up some 200gr Accubond loads for my 06 on my next day off, I have found Nosler's accuracy recommendation to be spot on in my rifles thus far.

I personally had great luck with Nosler Btips in .30-06.

Like most of my combat rifle loadings, ended up settling on H4895.

Kinda just always works out that way.

I try other powders. I really do, I promise ! I have the containers to prove it !

I too always seem to gravitate back to a small selection of go to propellants for all my reloading needs.:D My brother is REALLY cheap and the only way to get him to use premium bullets would be to actually buy the darned things for him to use.:banghead::rolleyes:
