They generally shoot with the same accuracy as the rifle offers with the factory chambering. This has been my experience with both a marlin in .30-30 and a Ruger MkII in .30-06.

If you can hit a target the size of a Buick 100yds away with 3 out of 5 shots you're ahead of 99% of the suckers who bought these, myself included with either the factory or handloaded variety

sabots

r you telling me these r not that accurate ?i have not heard that ,, as a matter a fact i was thinking of trying some . i have not heard any thing good but they r short lived, any ideas ?:what:

I have several boxes of the Accelerator ammo that my dad bought in the 80's or so I believe. Neither he, nor I have ever tried it though. Neat idea I guess, but as mentioned, most people report crappy accuracy, with a few saying its at least decent. Possibly depend on the particular gun a lot, or may just be based on different people expectations or definitions of "crappy" and "decent". I need to try some of mine out next time I go shooting, as I have always been curious how it will do in my Win. Model 70. I don't expect much, so maybe I'll get a pleasant surprise. If I get decent accuracy, It could have some neat shorter range varminting uses.

My boxes are marked at $21.Guess they were never very cheap....

I tried a box of them several years ago, both of my .30-06 rifles shot about 10" groups with them. Wasn't impressed.

I tried the factory Accelerators and wasn't impressed with the accuracy in a .30-06.

Then I tried reloading with the plastic sabots. A lot of hassle, and not very uniform sabots. Hard to get bullet seating depth consistent, even using the recommended plastic seating die. Poor accuracy again.

So I gave up. 58gr Hornadys in a .243 is how you solve this problem.

(Let the .30-06 push something a little larger. :) )

Find somebody with a .308 swaging tool. Run some 80-grain pistol bullets (.32ACP, .32-20) through to true them for diameter, if need be.

Somewhere toward 55 grain of 3031 (work up to it) gets you up toward 3,800 or 3,900 ft/sec.

Ruff on rabbits.

Do NOT shot a buzzard that's directly overhead.

:), Art

I'm sure there's a story somewhere, but I'm also sure Art heard it third-hand. Buzzards are a protected species.

I have a friend who made up some *interesting* loads off saboted .30-06. It did funny-looking things to plate steel. That plastic sabot was hard to get out of the grooves, too.

Regards,
Rabbit.

S.A., I'm gettin' to where I'm sorta like old Elmer: "Hell, I was there!" You live this long, you don't really need third-hand stories.

I was a sweet 16 with my first '06. Wandering around my grandfather's back pasture. Loaded up with 80-grain .32-20 bullets.

Ya know how a buzzard will glide into the wind and sorta pause before peeling off to the side? One did just that, directly above me. By reflex and curiosity--and obviously without rational thought--I "up and shot" and center-punched him.

Big mistake.

Lemme tell ya: I'd have gotten at least a Silver at any Olympics ever held. I outran the rain, and boy, did it rain!

Some things you just don't try twice...

Art....'round these parts, we call those "puff birds."

There have also been sightings of various other "puff" animals, such as puff squirrels and the occasional puff coyote, though those are rare.

I've shot a few thru mine before. Just plinking. The impact on a water filled plastic jug at 50 yards is really impressive. I have no idea what other use the round may have.

accelerator

is the accuracy of accelerators good if they hit 10" at 100 yards or 5". I dont understand crappy .................help:evil:

don't trade that 30-06 in.use the 110 grain bullet from either hornady or even better, sierra for up to 400 yard shots on ground hogs 54 grains of imr4064

I guess with the correct twist barrel and roll your own handloads sabot rounds could be made to shoot as accurate as any ammo.

Take all the "new" sabot shotgun and muzzle loaders rounds available as an example, and most are extremely accurate, this was due to reasearch by the small arms industry.

Sabot rounds are shot in some of the armed forces tanks big guns, through smooth bore barrels with accuracy on par with other rounds of simalr size.

So I guess it is , how far are you willing to go to shoot accurate sabots?

the 120mm smoothbore guns on modern tanks are a little different, im pretty sure the shells apfsds (armor piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot) are more equivalent to a giant flechette than a bullet. The reason its smoothbore is because the spin imparted to the fin stabilized projectile decreases accuracy.
