if your aim is to kill north American game animals out to 500 yards the 3006 will do it as good as any caliber out there. don,t buy into the, it will not hype. a A-MAX or SST 165gr(bc .447-.475 with COL 3.230-3.240) bullet at 2900 fps will have over 1900 fps and over 1300 fpe at 500 yards. with a good range finder and no wind it would be a chip shot from a good rest. easy to find ammo any where and easy to reload for.

An older Rem 700 in '06 may be an excellent choice, since most people who have them don't shoot them much. A 20 year-old one in very good condition may be had for about $500 and in may not have seen more than 50 rounds through it. It may even have a decent scope on it, but watch out for Redfield Widefield and a few others, which may be junk by this time.

I passed one down to my son that probably had about 400 rounds through it over 25 years or so, but the '06 isn't hard on bores, if kept clean. It still shoots under 1 MOA, but is bedded.

Like any used hunting rifle, check the bore carefully, due to possible rust. If it's not clean and shiny, either clean/inspect it before buying, or walk away.

Looking to add a Bolt Action 30.06 to my collection. My budget range limit is $700.00 & South. What's a good name brand in that price range?
So, if I may be so bold and obtrusive in the asking, have you narrowed things down in your 30/06 search, IfIHitU? I keep searching up candidates for you on Gunbroker (you're welcome;)) and I'm just curious how it's going, if you don't mind divulging. Rifle shopping often seems like prospecting and I'm rooting for you to strike it rich. Hope you find a gem!
