I'm looking for a bolt action rifle for Deer hunting. I'm leaning towards 30.06 since I can reload for it. I see a lot of Remington, Savage, and Rugers around. Which of these would you recommend? I call tell you anything you need to know about semi autos, I'm not up to speed on Bolt actions. The budget is somewhere in the $350-$500 range.

You probably won't find a Ruger or Remington new in that price range, maybe a Savage. All three are solid choices for hunting and finding a good used one in that price range would do nicely.

In that price range Weatherby Vangards are $399. Savage package guns are about the same. A new Ruger will be $550-$600. Remington SPS will be a little less.

Lots of good used Rugers and Remingtons in that range.

New, in that price range?
Pretty much narrows it down to a Savage.
New to you? Options are endless if your a bargain hunter.
Plus unless you go with open sights you'll have to fork out for some glass.

At that price your stuck with a Savage, OR you could get a Stevens (Savage w/o accutrigger) and get an extra barrel in a diff caliber too-

You will have to step up to $600 for a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 30.06 and $750 for a Remington 700 30.06 Custom unless you go used.

Look on the Forum called 24hourcampfire. Look in the classifieds for a like new Remington ADL 30-06 with laminated stock being sold by Hikerbum for $475 shipped to FFL. I have no association with him other than recently buying the scope that came off this rifle. If you can find a FFL to get it shipped to for reasonable fee, this would be a good deal IMHO. A guy backed out of buying the action, so the whole rifle is back up for sale.

Heck offer him $435-450 and maybe he'll take it. Let him know you're on a tight budget, which you are.

Get the savage and don't look back. In fact if you get one in something other than .30-06 pm me and I'll sell you a .30-06 barrel for it.(as long as it's small shank which it probably will be)

Here is one retail package thart Savage sells. But. if you shop hard you will probably be able to upgrade the package amd still only pay about $500. (Try to find this package... Model 111FXP3.)

For value I'd go for a Savage, next would be Ruger.
Remingtons are nice, but I've never really noticed the difference, except the pricetag.

From what I'm seeing and hearing it looks like I'm looking for a Savage.
Is the 270 a better overall hunting round then the 30.06? It seems like more of these rifles are offered in the 270.

My local Wholesale Sports in Canada has this package for $399.95... Should probably go buy that.

That's because the smart people are buying up all the .30-'06 ones.:)
.270 .280 and .30-06 are similar enough for hunting that it won't matter.
Quite true, but you can buy milsurp .30-'06 ammo cheaper than just about any centerfire rifle ammo now. Good for plinking/practice, and the brass is reloadable. There are many more choices for factory ammo in '06 than .270. I readily concede that no deer will be any deader from a 30 cal 150gr bullet, compared to a .270 130gr bullet, but you can buy factory ammo for '06 in bullets from 55gr to 220. JMNSHO

I had a Savage and really liked it. Mine was a target rifle and therefor a bit heavy for hunting. Any of the three would be a good rifle.

Go with a savage, if you buy use then make sure the savage has an accu trigger. I purchased a Stevens, same as a savage without the accu trigger brand new for 250 in 7 mag with a pencil for a barrel and shot 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards. That is damn accurate rifle for 250 dollars.
