Hi folks.

I will be doing my first black bear hunt this spring. I will be using a .30-06.

Any thoughts on cartridge choice from experienced bear hunters would be appreciated.

Oh, no, this guy told me to take the scope off my .30-06 so when the bear shoves it up my......................

Most people on the internet seem to think it takes a .470 Nitro to kill any bear. .30-30 works FANTASTIC on black bear. Why wouldn't a .30-06 be "adequate".

A 30-06 with a good bullet is just fine for any black bear. Brown bears are another story.

30-06 is perfectly adequate for any animal in Northamerica, Grizzly included.

Choose your load and bullet accordingly. Bears are not bulletproof.

The following is a review on Midwayusa written by a user of a 220 gr. Nosler Partition out of a 30-06 used on a Grizzly bear

This bullet is truly a heavy weight performer king when it come to 30 cal. bullets. I took a nice 7 1/2 ft brown bear with this bullet in 30-06 (2550 fps) that was causing trouble around are camp near Yakutat, AK. the fall of 2001. Shot was taken at 40 yards broadside chest through the right shoulder. Dropped the bear in his tracks. The Nosler 220 Partition drove a ping pong ball size hole through the bear that exit through the shoulder. Impressive! And accurate! It is my go bullet when my shots will be less then 200 yards in the 30-06.

It seems "adequate" to me....

You don't need Nosler Partitions to kill a black bear with a 30-06.

How many black bears have been killed with a 30-30 and 150 grain soft-points?
Too many to count.

Any good 30-06 165 - 180 soft-point like a Rem Core-Lokt or Win Power-Point from Walmart will probably do in a black bear better / faster then a Nosler Partition due to better expansion right in the boiler room.

They ain't Godzilla!
And you don't need 4 foot of penetration to kill one.

I don’t see why the 30-06 wouldn’t be more than adequate. Black Bear stories share the same element is fishing stories they keep on getting bigger.;) One of the better sources of information concerning Black Bears is a book from the Pennsylvania Game Commission.:)

rcmodel..Your choice of bullets will kill a black bear but to say they will do it better than a Nosler Partition is rediculous. The blackie is not difficult to kill if you put one in the boiler room but it doesn't always work that way in the real world. When it doesn't the Partition will do the job much better than the bullets you mentioned.

Killed my first black bear with an 06 with remy 180 grain corlock. worked outstanding for me and I would use it again in a heart beat. If I were going to buy a box of shells just for bear I would prob lean towards Nosler partition or some thing in the same class. My bear just happend to be broad side and 20 yards away. When I shot my bear I was deer hunting and not looking for a bear he just happend along and I happend to have a tag with his name on it.

My grandpa killed 10+ black bears, all with .270 and 130 grain bullets. I'd say any 150 gr or better 30 caliber bullet will do the job just fine.

last fall i killed 2 black bears with my 6.5x55 140 gr droped them with one shot each!
a 350 lbs bore with a neck shot and a 200lbs with a head shot. so if that can do it then a 30-06 should be EZ

Some say partitions (relatively expensive), some say Corelokt (might not do a good job on a shoulder shot), why not split the difference and go with Accubonds or Interbonds?

It just so happens that a 140gr 6.5x55 penetrates as well as a .30-06 bullet. Your 6.5 is better than you know.

It depends on the 30-06 bullet....try a 220 gr. or a Woodleigh 240 gr. Weldcore....you may be surprised...;):eek::D

Even the 160 gr. 6.5mm bullet (SD .328) cannot match the SD of the 220 gr. (.331) and 240 gr. (.361!!!) 30 cal. bullets.

The 06 is a great all around gun. I like clients to use heavy pills that leave a good exit wound should the shot be off by a little bit. Bear fat has a tendancy to block the entry wound, and even a smaller exit wound after a short time. Of course a perfect shot negates this, but in the real world odd things happen that shouldn't. You will be happier with a larger pill as long as the ranges are kept close. (Inside 200, which most black bear shots are taken from) I have crawled around way too many tamarak swamps on my hands and knees looking for a poorly hit bear from a client who had to shoot a lightweight load.

saturno v..Don't know where you're getting the 6.5x55 SD numbers from. All 140gr bullets that I'm familiar with have SD numbers over .400. Federal .440, Remington .436, Norma .467 etc..

"...the Partition..." Thousands of black bears have been killed with one shot long before the Partition came along. Like RC says, you don't need premium bullets, Partitions or otherwise, for Yogi.
Nor do you need 180s. The same ammo used for deer will do nicely.
martinc64, you reloading or using factory? There's no game in North America that a .30-06 won't kill with a change of bullet. However, think 165 grain bullets, factory or handloads, for any game you care to hunt.
If you have a load that shoots well, sight in about 4" high at 100 and you'll be on target out to about 300. If you don't, you'll have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. Then sight in 4" high and practice, off hand, at a 9" pie plate at 100 until you can hit it every time.
